well, let's just see it at the first...

basically strange reasons make Sony to do this step, may be it is just a side of the global changes within Sony.

I think this is being done to encourage developers to code on PS3 first, then port across to the PC and 360, thereby maximising the games potential on PS3 rather than the (generally) more common situation of coding on the 360 and then making inferior PS3 ports.

The question is whether one can develop for PS3 with this or not.

From what I read, its basically an SDK for developing games that runs on Windows or whatever and that can then be recompiled for PS3 if sony thinks its worth giving your game approval.

Unless this actually allows you to write a game that uses 3D and load it onto a normal PS3, I dont see this going very far.

Until they put out a press release that says it's free for non developers then you don't need to worry.

You won't be able to run anything on a PS3 unless you have a TEST. In any case I would imagine that the PS3 target would be available only to licensed developers, why would anyone else need it?

Sony seem to want to "flip" the tables. Essentially, if one makes games for the PS3 first, it will most probably mean (in most cases) that the PC and 360 versions will be inferior, hence making the PS3 look as the 'best' platform for the consumer.

Clever trick, but I wonder if this SDK can really put aside what the industry norm is (DirectX/XNA) for high-end platforms, considering so many developers are used to coding on alternative -to the ps3- platforms until now.

I think Sony should start paying folks if they have want to aggressively turn the tide, especially in light of the larger user base that the 360 and PC share compared to Sony's platform.

If I had a studio, I d have every reason to develop using Microsoft's tools because of the higher profitability expected (based on the user-base alone) and the fact that my staff would have been used to Direct X (even if they haven't coded a single console game before)

2 Barc0de , I think you are just more incline in the way of MS instead of Sony.

There are always a rumor like that , once I heart the it is had to cooperate with Nintendo due to the fact they pressing external companies really hard and most succesfull titles from the big N and only.
On the other side many even new companies are willing to start with Nintendo.

Also Nintendo Wii is using like OpenGL , PS3 is like OpenGL, only Xbox 360 about DirectX and PC. But please consider that profit on consoles market way higher then PC.

Meaning of console is not to be always on the edge as for HW specifications.

I'd go for the one that allowed me to make the most of money, which isn't going for DirectX and nothing else.

It's quite funny, on another forum I've been defending Windows against Linux because on the desktop they offer good development tools. However, on the xbox they have good tools too. I know someone who loves them. That is just a preference though, nothing to do with money.

Games take so long to develop you can't just decide that you won't support all the current platforms, in case someone drops out of the market in six months time. Anyone who was exlusive on the dreamcast got burnt.

I wouldn't be suprised if Microsoft killed the 360. They can afford to keep it on, any normal company would have dropped it already.

Interesting, but why would they then make it cross platform saying it supports DirectX if only Sony developers will get this. Seems counter-productive this way. Either release it to everyone as a cross-platform alternative to XNA or just keep it on the PS3/PSP and other sony related platforms.

    You misread my post.

I didn't say exclusive to 360 and PC. All I said was that I d rather pay attention to detail on the 360 and PC version and then worry about porting to PS3 with its smaller user base.

The Wii isn't even in the same league, because things on the Wii can be done in much more simple ways due to the technoogical gap as well as the good familiarity of developers and the company with the system
