oh lol.. yeah I completely forgot about that, since it was just the titlescreen but not entire BGs from levels.

Anyway, we may continue our journey of stollen images for videogames BGs in here, because I know that there are still plenty out there :nod:

Ha! I used to think that maybe they took a picture of a scale model close to a window. Haven't seen Blue Thunder in years, should watch it again soon.

Loved those backgrounds in Last Resort, never knew they were from Akira.

I always figured they were ripping off Roger Dean's art. Many artists were "inspired" by Roger Dean.

Was this really so common back then? I remember a more recent PC game (from maybe around 2004 or so?) where the developer was harshly criticized for reusing a lot of art assets from other RPGs of the period, notably Elder Scrolls: Morrowind. Of course, it's arguable that the theft in a lot of these 16-bit games was more about affection for the source material than it was a cheap creativity shortcut.

 

Not a background, but K9999 from KoF 2001 practically IS Tetsuo.


And there's an insane amount of games that crib from Giger's classic Alien design...
