The "The future is bleak and everyone knows it" thread

While it's popular to bitch and moan about really retarded shit in Japan -- automated teller machines which aren't so automated, schedule body checks in pools, really fucking expensive taxis, and for some reason a policy of denouncing brazillian waxing full stop -- we're missing a massive point, and a very important one if you're thinking of retiring here: The totally fucked economy. The only reason things aren't as dire here as they are in the west is b/c Japan is still on the same shitty recession since 1990. That's not reason to celebrate though.

Here's a recent article that puts it into a very painful persepctive:

    Enjoy

indeed, i have long since accepted that the route to mild redemption is to buckle down, and get ready for financial assrapage.

we are potentially in the clear on the house and land as we could probably clear it down with savings, but that leaves us with fuck all ... and even if we didn't clear down the house and kept the money, if it's in YEN i might as well be wiping my arse with it in 5 years time.

Greece was the warning sign, Japan will be the flag on the play.

Don't forget the nearly 800 billion or so U.S. Treasuries that Japan owns. The way this country is going those won't be worth squat in a few years.

Clearly Japan needs more offspring, which I am happy to create for them.

Unfortunately they really don't want yours though (or mine). Like I was telling one of my bosses today... in the states, all you hear about is the economy, change, how to make things better or at least "Yeah, the next 5 years will suck but we'll bounce back". I think that's probably right. Maybe it's the language barrier but it just seems like Japan's been sitting here holding it's cock for the last 20 years while everything around it crumbles. They keep lowering taxes and try to make having offspring cheaper. What do people do? Hoard the money. It's working about as well as trickle down economics. Nobody is having kids and immigrating still takes a miracle to get through.

THey are dumb fucks that can't see reality. That is Japanese in a nutshell. Plain and simple. They all need a good kicking to wake them up.

This weeks' Economist special pretty much sums it up - mounting debt, ageing population, looming threat of rising bond yields and perennial deflation topped up with a dose of political torpor. Just read it over breakfast, it is quite depressing

They're all making out all the time trying to get some type of European Union style love-in going. Thing is, everyone fucking hates Japan b/c of the pre-war atrocities, and still not bucking up for said atrocities. Apparently a panel equally split of Chinese & Japanese deliberated for 3 years and can still not agree on the numbers of the massacre of Nan King. That was taxes well spent. They do at least, admit wrong doing.

And for the record, I think China is a fucking disaster all on its own, but I'm only familiar with their joke of a human rights policy and their shitty lead-tainted toys. (Yes, I'm a bitter parent).

Yeah, but all those games of Freecell won't play themselves!

Not like the US and UK have much larger external debts... I can see the UK going bust before Japan does.

The bad thing about the Japanese government printing money to service their debts is the fact that the Yen is stupidly strong.

Generally the UK actually has a clue though. This is the make it or break it thing. Japan's biggest problem is depoplulation and even my 3-year old son knows it. Their counter measures are laughable at best.

Even though GP slayed this idea, I'm still going to repeat it for good measure.

    There, that's better.
