On Tuesday, the BBC aired their unauthorized dramatization of the struggles Rockstar had with video game violence campaigners, starring Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxton. It centred around cases filed by Jack Thompson, e.g. Strickland v. Sony, plus the Hot Coffee controversy. Previously known as Game Changer, it was broadcast as The Gamechangers.

For those with a UK IP address, it can be seen here:

Interestingly, it is part of the BBC's Make It Digital season - part of their "major UK-wide initiative to inspire a new generation to get creative with coding, programming and digital technology" ...suprising, therefore, that The Gamechangers is "intended for an adult audience."

In May, Rockstar filed a lawsuit trying to prevent the BBC from releasing this programme. It seems that they failed:

However, the broadcast met a lot of criticism from Rockstar and former DMA Design employees:

...although their opinions seem to largely be based on facts from pre-Rockstar times, so it's possible things had changed by then. Just unlikely ;)

It DOES seem that they were factually incorrect on a number of points, though. Their timeline certainly seems confused - Vice City was released in 2002 and, whilst Jack Thompson was involved with two cases involving murders by GTA III players, the Devin Moore case was not filed until 2005 (although the shooting was in 2003), by which time San Andreas had long been released. In fact, Hot Coffee was discovered and patched before Jack Thompson's licence was revoked.

So, what do you think? Good to have a drama about video games? Typical alterations for dramatic effect? Or "random, made up bollocks" as Rockstar suggest?
