I bought a new TV that doesn't have VGA, so I purchased a VGA to HDMI converter - well two different models actually.

The common issue seems to be random, sporadic signal loss, jumpy picture, flickering or no picture signal at all.

Sometimes (not usually) I get a perfect signal.
Newer NG Dev games work best
Capcom vs. SNK 2 is the EXTREME worst I've tested

640x480p@60Hz issue also happens with connected laptop
    Higher resolutions work without issue

480p is working on both TV sets I tested via component (Xbox/PS2/Wii)

    Tested all cables are working

I've ordered a KVM switch bc I read where someone added one between VGA cables that was having this issue and it resolved it.
I was already thinking along these lines, except instead I was going to use a Scanline Generator.
My thinking is the KVM/SLG would take the signal without much fuss and output a more stable signal to the converter.

If anyone has any ideas please feel free to share - I'm pulling my hair out.

I'm just guessing... the supported input doesn't mention 480p. could that be it? maybe return it and buy a DC scart cable and scart to hdmi upscaler to 720p.

Are you talking about the converter?

The Dreamcast displays interlaced or progressive scan video at 640 × 480 video resolution via VGA.

The KVM didn't help - same result. It was a cheaper auto-sensing unit with manual selection buttons. I'm not sure if that made a difference or if it would have even mattered in my case. Anyhow, I have a KVM again - I gave my old one to a friend.

I'm wondering if I should try VGA to Component or grab a Scart cable and go RGB to HDMI/Component. Sounds like I'll be spending a small fortune for the later.

Still got hdmi issues? have you tried the mini one I suggested in the other thread? I have no issue with it. Also, might be worth checking if it's the tv that doesn't like 480p. Plug a laptop in hdmi 640x480 into it to see.

I'm getting the same thing with the laptop. Works a small percentage of the time. On the DC: Some of the NG Dev games work perfect - once I finally get a signal. I think some games are refreshing the signal more often and that's where the converter freaks out.

Since I get a working signal sometimes, I think it's not the TV but yet another junk adapter.

I was really close to purchasing that mini one on eBay but they kept jacking the price and I noticed it had a 720P/1080P switch - I want to take 640x480 and output 480P preferably.

I meant don't use the VGA2HDMI converter, use the HDMI out of the laptop and plug it in the hdmi in of the TV directly; set your laptop resolution to 640x480 and play some stracraft. If there's still issues, get a refund for you TV!

Ah, good idea. My laptop is too old unfortunately. I have some other HDMI stuff, but I don't think any of them do 640x480.

Actually... now that I think about it... My computer is hooked up via DVI to HDMI cable and I can see the BIOS screen just fine... pretty sure that would be 640x480, before the OS boots... it's not the new UEFI.

My 0.02, could it be the dreamcast? I had one dreamcast that would flake out all the time with VGA, mostly drops outs and color loss, but I tried a second one and it was perfectly fine same VGA cable and set. Never did find out what was wrong with the first, sold it to a neighbor long ago as composite worked just fine. So if you have the chance try a second dreamcast with your setup.

I'm in a similar boat; OP - i use an older VGA box & a different HDMI converter, the one on monoprice right now...if you think it'd work better for you, im holding out for the Kenzai (here on this forum, hopefully soon!) - if that works out i'd be happy to pass off mine for cheap, man. just really hoping to find a way to play Bangai-O again one day too.

Quick question , i just got a hdmi upscaler and as you can see in the picture it says 640 x 480 does this mean its not being upscaled?
I am a bit of a n00b at this so just concerned!

i have had the same problem ,have 5 dreamcast and would have these problems with my older models ones with the metal fans.dont know if the age of the system had anything to do with the problem .or just the port itself being used /old . hope this helps.

I've been roughing it with Composhit to HDMI

    Just a quick update
Dreamcast to VGA works fine - problem is VGA to HDMI
I believe it's some sort of SYNC issue, as higher resolutions work fine

Laptop and Dreamcast BOTH have issues @ 640x480p
SAMSUNG TV accepts 480p signals no problem

I can swear that I've read somewhere that the sync is different between 640x480 and 1280x768 and higher. Got to be taken into account for scanline genrators, so for converters to I guess.

edit: TriMesh confirmed that on the chatbox. It may not be your problem, but it could be.

Any modern TV will always show it's original resolution. So if it's a full hd tv, 1920×1080. It doesn't matter if you are feeding it with a blu-ray or an Atari2600. Whatever shows up on the onscreen display as a resolution is simply to inform the input resolution of that particular source. The TV will always "upscale" to it's original resolution, but since it doesn't have a good upscaler to begin with, the image result of anything lower than 480p is very bad.

Finally, to answer your question, no, the HDMI upscaler you got is just converting the analog source to digital, not doing any sort of upscaling.

I use a Hanzo VGA Box and put that one into a VGA to HDMI converter / upscaler to 720p, it works perfect! I guess the original 480i/p signal makes problems on some TVs. My Capture Card on PC for example wont show any picture for any signal below 720p so if i never did upscale it i never would get a picture. 1x Hanzo Box 1x LIGAWO VGA + YPbPr to HDMI 720p Scaler, great combination!
