By removing the controller and memory ports, and the software that handles that GC compatibilty. The used Wii consoles are so cheap now that I have actually been thinking of having two, so I can play homebrew in one and Wiiware in the other.
They should have gone even lower on the price since the wii hardware is so outdated now and most gamers have moved on (except those using wiibrew) I think $70 with all the games at 24.95 would bring new life into the system or at least new adopters.
This is obviously going to be the 'RVL-101' Wii model, just like all the other Nintendo '101' models released near the end of a consoles lifespan. Anybody else think they may combine the CPU/GPU into one chip? Perhaps even use passive cooling. Also, by removing the GameCube controller ports and memory card slots they have extra space on the motherboard, which could allow them to combine the drive board chips onto the motherboard and so prevent WODE etc from being connected.
People have hardly "Moved On" There are still TONS of games including Wii-Ware AND Virtual Console games that are worth playing. First it was "LOL PS3 HAS NO GAMES" now it's "LOLWIIHASNOGAMES" Not to mention if you DO have a current Wii and own a bunch of GC games that opens up an even bigger library as well as other things such as WAY cheaper component video for GC games. Just because "X" big name developer isn't making this year's "Call of Duty" caliber game for the Wii that is technologically from 10 years ago, does not mean it's an EOL Game System. It will probably still be sold and be moderately successful AFTER the WiiU comes out. Just as the PS1 and PS2 were.
Two words you Wii-hating bastards: Light Trax http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvJcnVr-9dg it's wiiware and it's the most awesome game I've played this fast few years. The soundtrack, the graphics, the gameplay - all amazing, Skip has done it again. Come to think of it, Skip also made Chibi Robo on the GC, too bad we didn't get a Wii sequel :/
I wasn't hating on the wii. Some of the best games this gen are on the wii. However the reality is the wii's hardware doesn't have hdmi and is essentially a modified gamecube graphics wise. The price drops of the ps3 and 360 with hdmi support and much better hardware is something that is obviously going to effect the wii. If you remember back in the 80s, the atari 2600 continued to sell for years after the nes. They did drop the price down to $50 to make it an extremely reasonable choice for familes who want a game system. I think nintendo should take this strategy. The motion control wii wand alone is just not going make it as different a system choice as it was before kinect and psmove. So again, I like the wii its got a great software library, just looking at the reality of the situation today.
Nintendo always releases revisions of their consoles, and in this case the fact is that 9 out of 10 wii owners dont give a shit about the GC...........or didnt know it existed. To me what nintendo should be doing is seriously rethink the WiiU to avoid a new 3DS. Lower price, keep the motion controllers (maybe add stuff like visual recognition like kinect) and ditch the screen controller, or at least make it decent (use a capacitive screen you cheap fucks!) Of all the great examples of wii gameplay, you could only come up with that?
I'm torn. On the one hand I like cheaper stuff. On the other I'd like to have GameCube backwards compatibility. Given they're just removing the ports and some drive functionality, I'll bet a few hackers will fix the problem eventually.
are you implying that they'll hack GC compatibility onto the new Wii? If the hardware isn't there I don't think there's much to do. The Wii might have similarities with the GC at heart, but their I/O and peripheral devices don't match. Removing GC compatibility kills it for Wii games that support the GC controller, namely Brawl to point out the most popular.
Removing gamecube compatibility is silly IMHO. I went straight from n64>wii, so my gamecube library was bought in retrospect, i don't even own a pal gamecube to play my games! Also my entire gamecube controller collection sprung from playing SSB Brawl on wii, and showing them off at parties (the keyboardtroller is a killer ). I would say bring on a design change, but its already the smallest current gen console. Maybe if they integrated the power supply or something productive rather than remove a main function, or possibly change the internal components to a cheaper variety, i would buy one. No GC compatibility, No buy.
Just curious, are you interested in purchasing a Wii? I never use mine. I really didn't see a new Wii model appearing, kinda surprised especially after that new Wii announcement.
When I buy a Pee, then I will buy one that has GC backwards compatibility. If ever am going to buy one of those pieces of shit, I am getting sick and tired of the cut a heel cut a toe deals. All the fucking time.
I hate to say it, but the Wii is meagre. We all had high hopes, and nothing came. Mine is just a glorified Gamecube. It sickens me to think that Nintendo could have made some awesome games- F-Zero, Pikmin, new franchises perhaps? I would have loved some decent four play co operative games a la Four Swords, as I don't mind carting the Wii around or to another house for instance. I would have even liked some decent four player party games rather than oodless of shovelware. Seriously, I think I own and really enjoyed about six Wii games. There are a few I'd like to try out such asWario Shake, DKCR... erm.. that may be it... Nintendo are slowly fading into obscurity with regards to 'proper' games.
I'd like a red Wiii. The only things I get for it are Metroid, DKCR, and the Marios. And I probably wouldn't play the Marios because I haven't like once since after 64. I've TRIED to like Sunshine... TRIED!!!! No dice. And even after all the hooplas about the galaxy, I just didn't enjoy the waggle. But I am interested in Family Fishing, oddly enough.
This Mario & Sonic bundle gets released mid November in Europe, featuring the new version of the Wii.
