Is anyone here a poker player? I mean a real player. There's a difference between someone who plays poker and a poker player. I love poker, been playing it for over 10 years in Casinos in LA and Vegas. The explosion of poker on TV has caused an explosion of new players into the game. And these new players annoy the shit out of me. Here's what bothers me: 1. Royal Straight Flush. The hand just doesn't exist. It's a Royal Flush or a Straight Flush. You never say Royal Straight Flush. 2. Stop with the Kenny Rogers lyrics. If someone says, "You never count your money while you're sitting at the table" with a serious look on his face I'm going to shoot that person. It's a song. It's not a poker rule. And you shouldn't be lecturing people with song lyrics because it just exposes you as the newby at the table. 3. Winning one night doesn't make you a good player. Losing one night doesn't make you a bad player. Poker is a game that's played throughout your life. The goal is to win more than you lose. It doesn't mean you're going to sit down and win every time you play just because you're a good player. 4. You most often lose the hand right in the beginning by staying in on cards that you should have folded. Yeah, sorry the other guy rivered a king and beat you. But you shouldn't have been in with Q-3 anyway. That's when you lost the hand. 5. I don't care what you would have had if you had stayed in instead of folded. I know that you don't care what I would have had it I had stayed in instead of folded. I don't annoy you with the story, so please show me the same courtesy. 6. When the cards are in front of you, deal. That's even if you won the last hand. 7. Learn from the most experienced players, not from the players who are winning the most, although sometimes they are one in the same. Watching some guy win a huge pot on a bad decision is pure luck. And over time he will lose that hand more than he wins it. You happened to see a time when he wins. You won't see all the times when he loses. Don't make strategy based on one hand. 8. If you're one of those players who gets angry when people tell you to hurry up, then you call the bet and stay in the hand just out of pride, you're going to lose money in poker. 9. I don't care what the book says. 10. For God's sake don't quote odds or percentages at the table. Telling me that you have a 60% advantage means nothing on just one hand. Those odds are played out over time, not in an instant. 11. It's ok if you sit out one hand because you have to go to the bathroom or get a drink. Making 9 other people wait so you don't have to wait is collectively a much greater loss of time. 12. There is no one rulebook. Did I miss anything?
Yeah, I play cards. I learned here in Tokyo about 5 years ago I would say. I guess it was starting to take off in the states, but I was quite seperated from all of that. I've only been to Vegas twice. I did okay each time. The second session I actually won, even after losing two stacks. 1: 99 in the hole, QQ9 on the flop. I lost to a guy holding QQ. 2: QQ in the hole., AQ10 on the flop. There was a preflop raise under the gun (by a Japanese sushi chef if you can believe that). He was very tight & disciplined. I figured he's only got one hand that beats me, as he's not going to raise under the gun w/ JK. Of course, he had it (AA). The last game I played here before my son was born I had built up 20,000 yen to about 70,000. It's the end of the night, and I call a raise w/ 88. I'm on the button. AJ8 flop. There's a $100 bet on the flop. I raise to $250. Another caller, and the original better folds. Rag on the turn. I'm all in -- he turns over JJ. I've lost thousands w/ a set of 8's. It always fucks me. The thing that sucks about playing in the states, is it's really hard to find a non-Hold 'em only game. In Hawaii, I could find a NL Hold 'em game any day of the week. No Omaha...ever. The games here are well-rounded. Many dealers choice games. Breaks the monotony. The thing about Vegas is that it gets boring sometimes. It's generally a few really tight players at each table going after the fish. You never see the good players go after each other, unless they've both got really good hands.
The "Royal Straight Flush" comes from when you have a "trumph" colour , and it is usual spades, and then when you have a "RSF" then it means you have Jack, Queen, King, And Ace in spades. Or something like that.
I can only disagree with your first point. The full "Royal Straight Flush" is the name the hand originally had. "Royal Flush" is only the shortened name that was adopted later. The "Royal" portion of the name was just used to signify the highest straight flush possible. If you want to be picky, then the hand should only be called a Straight Flush as you could technically have a non-straight flush hand with all face cards if you are playing a multideck game. In other words, a Royal "Flush" could occur with two Kings, an Ace, a Jack and a Queen of the same suit. Hell, most people who play poker don't even announce their hands at all.
i used to like poker before the craze set in.. now its on TV every fucking night and in all the newsstands and everyone knows someone who became rich of playing it online .. ..i cant stand the indoctrination anymore, to the point i dont even enjoy it over a drink with good friends.:-(
I'll only play 1/2, 2/4 limit or 1/5 seven-card at casinos because of the idiots that (try to) play no limit.
It has helped the game. More average players = more bad players = easier to make money. Annoying, yes. But more profitable. I used to play at a 5/10 no limit game on the island. Very fun, and if you play relatively tight poker, you can play the cards and win a few hundred bucks. Sure, you won't win thousands like the other guys, but it's steady.
We actually have a regular game here once a week. It's bloomed into about 15 players. We usually have 2-3 tables going during the night. It's been a really nice thing to have. But...that's what prompted the original post. It's nice to have a game but I feel like I'm going up against 14 clones. One guy won a couple of weeks in a row and he's asking people if they think he could cut it in Vegas. Just play the game...
