haha always get that reaction when i mention war gods, i enjoyed it was one of the 1st 3d fighting games i played. dont see why theres so much hatred for it.
I was an N64 kid, adamant I wouldn't give into the 'play-thing', a one child army against evil Fony. Looking back I read far too much Official Nintendo Magazine propaganda. But its a console I strangely have little nostalgia for, possibly because how I loathed how much of a little fanboi I once was and how its best titles get whored out or updated on enough different formats for me to be not bothered about picking one up. The N64 just seems like part of my foggy memories now. Probably enhanced by the Reality Engines shit-smeared textures and super ghost fogging power.
The N64 suffered because of nintendo being a dick to 3rd parties FFVII was meant to be a N64 game, but instead it went to the PSX, and thats just one example out of many People seem to forget that the PSX wasnt at the top of its game, lastgen we had 3 new companies fail big time so a lot of gamers thought newcomers were doomed. The PSX didnt take off until mid to late 1997 when the real epic games started to come out for it, the Saturn was already dying and nintendo made the big stupid mistake of having only a handful of good/decent games Had sony decided to launch during the 16bit gen it would've been OBLITERATED
Thing is that handful of decent games made it a winner for me. A lot of them ground-breaking titles like Super Mario 64, Goldeneye, Zelda etc. Sure, I guess there probably wasn't really much after that, but it was enough to keep me busy at the time. Did not (and still don't) care much for the Final Fantasy series. I can barely keep track of what's-what with that franchise.
Fog... That is the first thing that always comes into my mind when I think of the N64. It was a poorly designed system by a company that was so stuck in the past at the time that they couldn't see the future staring them straight in the face. 3rd party support from the major developers was a joke and with very few exceptions most games sucked unless they came from Nintendo or one of their patrons (Rare, Factor 5). This system was a disaster for Nintendo, Especially when you consider what they were coming off of with the SNES. It makes Sega's blunder with the Saturn all the more tragic as the Saturn could have easily been in a comfortable 2nd place had they not decided to shoot themselves in the head.
Christmas + Ocarina of Time = best Christmas ever! Seriously some of my favourite games are on this system, Zelda OoT/MM, Goldeneye, F-Zero X, Perfect Dark, the list could go on. But you can't deny the problems the system had, it was a failure there's no doubt about it. But it's problems we're less to do with the hardware and more to do with the software I think, had they got different developers on board things could have been different. The 64DD didn't help them out either, I mean had it been a part of the system from the start the extra disk space could have opened the doors to a whole load of posabilities, but in the end an expensive add on was no good for the system and was the sole cause for a lot of good titles to get cancelled. Meh, it was a bad generation for Nintendo but the system is still great, much like the Sega Saturn it's still one of my all time favourites.
It always amazes me to hear people say that the N64 was such a disaster. How were the sales? Everyone I knew as a kid loved the N64.
Dunno, the N64 had the saving grace of pokemon, which was Sonic times a million in terms of popularity back then. Stadium alone must have sold more N64 than mario64 and starfox combined On a side note, why did the guy from pokemon go to nintendo, considering he had already worked with Sega on Pulseman?
I notice a lot of people moaning about the fog; it is just an opinion of course, but to be fair I'd much rather that than "pop up" effect.. back in these days memory was still limited so when I play ps1 games as much as I love em seeing things just randomly apear as your going toward them is niggling to see even now.. admitadly playing ps1 games through a PS2 look better on current hd tv's but I still think now I have done my mod on N64 for RGB that the way the 3D looks so much more solid on n64 somehow added to that without all that pop up still makes it an amazing system to look at graphic wise (as long as you make the right TV choice mod choice)
We were a nintendo house and my brother always got the latest that came out, but the 64 was the first console I actually owned got it the christmass 96. Since my bday is a couple of days before xmas I got it that day, and let me tell you I played the shit out of mario 64. I remember my brothers friend who always imported stuff back in the day and he had a japanese 64 with mario 64 a couple of months before it came out here. I couldn't get enough of it. I even remember one day playing mario 64 the whole night and feel ling it was just 2 hours! And like ape never got a ps1 and didn't have my next system till dreamcast xmas 99. The 64 really did do a lot in standardizing 3d game play with games like mario 64, and regular features like analogue controllers and rumble. In fact I remember bringing home star fox 64 on launch day and being so amazed how it rumbled with certain action on screen and it was pretty accurate.I couldn't even play goldeneye with out cause it made it easier to tell I was being shot at! If anything what hurt the 64 was just using cartridges. Had it used cd it would of done a million times better. Of course 3rd parties were burned by nintendo from the previous eras, but you have to understand with the cost of the cartridges and the meager amount of space it was just more practical to develop for ps1. Hell I would imagine the 64 probably could of handled street fighter ports with ease had it used cd. Honestly dreamcast and 64 had alot of good memories for me as they did a lot of things that are standard in the industry now. I mean people forget that ocarina of time actually made lock on targeting standard. Before that you had games like resident evil where you just shot in the approximate direction and hoped it hit on target. Or who could forget the connectivity with pokemon stadium games or taking snap to blockbuster or depending on your country a specific store where you could go to a kiosk and print out your pictures. For god sakes it even made four players standard, before that it was an afterthought cause you had to buy a multi-tap which publishers felt most wouldn't bother buying. Sure it had the blur and the fog, but the trade off was you didn't deal with nasty clipping like you did on ps1(cool boarders was a huge offender of this). At the same time 64 was nintendo's last big hurrah. As for the wii u, based on pre orders its doing really well, but honestly I don't know if that nintendo magic will ever come back.
I think part of that sense of "more solid" 3D has to do with the terrible polygon-bending issues with the PS1. Later games minimized this issue somewhat, but it was really noticeable in earlier games. The N64 did not have this issue at all, as far as I can tell.
The system had a lot of titles were overlooked due to poor marketing with Blast Corps, Command & Conquer, F1 World Grand Prix II, Glover, Quake II, Rainbow Six, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Tetrisphere and Wetrix to name but a few. Also, the European / PAL box art seemed to be mocking us in contrast to the NTSC releases. The Black border around the artwork on the first and second party products served as a constant reminder that we were going to get a rather unnattractive border whilst playing the poorly optimised game too, whilst our NTSC cousins got to play their games at full speed on with a full screen.
i never got to play blast corps do you recommend it? my nephew currently has my N64 i may need to go get it back lol. the C&C port was imo very good, F1 GP was also good. didnt play rainbow 6 on it. Quake II was good but i preferred PC version so im biased there. never got to play Rogue Squadron , Tetrisphere was fun. never heard of Wetrix or Glover
Some says complains about fog but it wasn't there in all game, it was just an FX compromised inside the n64...
I have Blast Corps and I don't like it very much. It has some cool graphics and music, but the gameplay is somewhat lacking. I could never figure out what to do, honestly, and I usually get bored after playing it for 5 minutes or so. Rogue Squadron had a PC version too, by the way.
No wonder you didn't like it. Simply clear a path for the runaway nuclear missile carrier, by smashing the crap out of every structure in it's way. If the carrier hits something.... BOOM!!! ....You lose. The game is friggin awesome imo.
The Gamecube was the last hurrah, nintendo's last attempt at a true nextgen console Just like Sega did with the Dreamcast they solved a lot of problems and yet it was too late IMO the main problem was that it didnt have a killer apt: Xbox had Halo and PS2 had GTAIII GC still had awesome games but no the kind of epic stuff people goes batshit insane over.
Well, it is better than the Wii, though that isn't saying much. N64 was the first console I personally owned at the age of 6, but I played SNES/NES/GEN before that. It was always my least favorite console back then, and I had plowed though a lot of the big titles for it over time, but always ended up going back to the SNES or PS1. & it has definitely aged the worst.
I bought a N64 for two reasons.. Zelda and Super Smash Brothers, any chance to beat the shit out of Pikachu. I had some pokemon issues with Pokemon back then. I just had to rip that fur ball apart. I have the Expansion Pak, what games used this? I can't remember. =hugh
