Hey Everyone, I noted that loads of companies and people tend to price items from other parts of the world equivalently when listing in Pounds. That is, a $20 DVD from the US will cost like 20 pounds in the UK, when everyone knows the pound is like almost double the value of the dollar. So in effect your paying like $40 for one DVD. I've seen this from individual sellers too! Like 10 pounds for a game, which in effect costs around $20 USD/CAN if purchased elsewhere. Is this just the accepted practice? Or am I just crazy? (^_^); It makes it so hard to find deals when compared to buying from elsewhere in the world.
You are just seeing what we see all the time. Stuff new is the same. Apple tv 2? $99 in the us or £99 in the uk. We have always gotten screwed
Keep in mind though that you do live basically on an island, and everything is more expensive because of it.
I bought a Ghostbusters BluRay disc from Amazon US and with shipping to Japan it only cost 12 USD ! That's only 7 pounds or so. Even better it's only 922 yen which is way less than the japanese price of 3000 odd yen. the rule is, IMPORT! Amazon is your friend when it comes to Importing games and Movies. Yakumo
We do live on an Island... as do you! Your argument is null. Prices are more expensive here because we earn more, that's how the economy works..
There are additional rates and taxes that we apply here which make selling and operating here more expensive, hence the increase in prices. Apple for example may look like a con selling Apple TV for $99 and £99 but their profit on Apple TV in each territory will be near enough identical.
Fuck that, here in British Columbia prices have gone fucking insane! I am from Europe and I'm still shocked how expensive everything is. Pizza from Domino's for $25 my ass! I could get a better one in Germany for 7 Euros! They have some for $15 in other places but still, SEVEN in Europe. DELIVERED. Damn. Most Blurays and DVDs (except for the really unattractive ones) cost more than $15, many over $20. I've seen a Criterion release (single-disc amaray case, not a new release) for $57. WTF?? Alcohol, $30 for a bottle of the cheapest liquor (any kind) like Absolut or Jack Daniels. Most of this stuff comes from the same continent... in Europe it costs 12-15 Euros. The fuck is wrong with the price situation in this country? So stop whining about the pound Fair prices are the only thing I really REALLY miss about my home country. ~_~ I'm gonna buy like a maniac when I'm back for vacation.
You guys think thats bad, I started Purchasing Blu-rays excursively on amazon, simply because the prices here are insane. Last week I purchased the first season of Mongrels on Blu-ray for 5.59GBP locally it costs R549.99(44GBP) in the the shops allmost 10x as much, same with new release blue rays 15GBP on Amazon , R399.99(32GBP) in the shops. Lets look at consoles: AMAZON VS Local Wii: 129GBP VS R2299 (185GBP) 360 slim 4GB: 129GBP VS R2499 (201GBP) PS3 slim 160: 189GBP VS R3499 (282GBP) And the games are generally double that of whats listed on amazon, and sometimes 5x more after the first specials on amazon Yes I know its further for them to ship, but considering both comes from china, and we dont charge the 20% Vat ontop of it like Britain, and I can order games, dvds and Blu-rays on amazon with free shipping (if the order is above 25GBP) I just cant see it But our liqueur is cheap, Johnnie Walker Black Label R192 (15GBP) So is Takeouts and fast food restaurants, I have never payed more than R60 (5GBP)for a large Pizza with lots of toppings, for a good Cheese Spur Burger with chips its R35 to 40(2.82GBP to 3.22GBP) , and thats a thick pure beef patty(160gram) and not some "el cheapo MCDonalds patty", and if you buy on Mondays you get one free PS I dont know how those compare to US prices though , as I am sure at least the fast food should be cheaper in the US... Edit: Petrol at the moment is at R10.33(Per liter 0.83GBP)
I can get pizza for three Euros... yeah, Northern Europe is more expensive than Southern Europe for non-basic goods (for basic goods, other way around).
Games are stupidly priced here in Australia. It's cheaper for me to import games from the UK then taking the bus to the store and buy it. Example, Metroid Other M from Australia cost $80 NEW and imported from the UK for $20.. What the fuck? I've never understood how to buy off Amazon, for some reason it confuses me.. Something for once confuses me that's web based... Too bad stuff we like to eat, drink and be entertained from are going up in price locally, yet our jobs are not keeping up with the pay. Not sure if any one else is struggling, but many people in Australia are losing their homes because of the ridiculous prices here and I'm not just talking about Games and Movies.
it works both ways, Duvel (a heavy belgian beer) costs 2 euros here (when drinking it in a bar), yet in new york it costs $10 (and that was 5 or 6 years ago)
Not if you live outside of Japan it isn't, Amazon Japan are really tight with what they sell unless it's a book a cd or a dvd you can forget trying to order it LOL.
Oh yeah, I forgot about the 12% that come on top of the already over the top price Lol. But as far as fuel goes (for cars), it's not that bad. Of course it used to be much better for consumers, but it's still much cheaper than in other Western countries. Regular gasoline usually costs between 1,45 and 1,55 Euros in Germany, that's 1.88 Canadian Dollars. Here in BC it costs about 1.25 CDN$ and in Alberta it's even as low as 0.95 CDN$ most of the time. That's only 0.73 Euros/liter, about 50% of what Europeans pay. Still, a friend from Bahrain told me a tankful cost him a mere $15 hahah. So yeah, fuel prices are still fucked up. Although, maybe not for long, it's a limited supply so sources are gonna be drained eventually...
