Hi there folks, This will be my first proper post here, I'm much more of a forum reader than a poster so I've been hovering around here for a long time. I would like to start a register recording all Saturn related PsyQ hardware, possibly expanding to cross, sophia etc. at a later date. The information I would like to collect is: Who has what (aliases are fine) Region of the hardware (if applicable) Current location of hardware (eg. California, USA) PsyQ serial number. I must stress that all this information will NOT be made public, I aim to put up a web page for this register which will only show the PsyQ serials, hardware description and current country that the hardware resides in. I thought it would interesting for people interested to know exactly how much is still out there, and in what countries it ended up in, previous owners of systems may find they are now thousands of miles away, or still lurking in the same country. Perhaps a silly idea? I don't know but I'd really like to have some sort of audit of how much has survived. Let me know your thoughts on this idea, or feel free to post your systems and info here or PM me, and I'll hope I'm not breaking any rules asking folks for this sort of info.
I don't really get the point of this. They aren't classic cars, they're items that used to belong in development houses. Those companies are either gone or don't give a crap where their items are now. As for collectors, if we sell on eBay we don't give a crap where it went, and if we sell privately we know where it went. Furthermore, not many collectors will record their serial numbers and go looking for kit 123342, wondering where it ended up. I don't see that your reason given is a worthwhile one. I would also say that you're asking for very basic information. Is it still boxed? Is it complete? Does it still work? Are there any distinguishing features, like the two of us who have very different PsyQs? THOSE are some interesting questions. Also, you're talking about the PsyQ - I hope you realize that the cart is the PsyQ, NOT a modified Saturn. There are several of the Psygnosis modified Saturns around that don't have carts with them (the Saturns were NOT part of the Psy-Q kit, merely an optional extra) and to be honest, I don't really think it's interesting to know how many of those there are, save to prove that there are probably more of those floating around than the actual carts. My suggestion - build your website. Use PHP and a database, have it so users can input their own data preferably (even if it requires approval to go live). If anyone is suspicious of giving you their info, doing it that way might reassure them a bit. Somewhat like you get for classic cars, really. That said, welcome to the forums, hope you see your way to being more of a poster and, if you ever get bored of your Saturn dev stuff, give me a shout!
Hi there I'm well aware of the variation in PsyQ hardware, modified consoles, blue carts, dongles etc. I was pretty much trying to record anything with a PsyQ serial number on it and small details about where it is and what it is. Good idea about the packaging and condition though The whole idea came about after I was contacted by a gentleman trying to track down a blue cart with a specific serial, he seemed genuinely shocked that there was no record of who the systems were originally sold to, and subsequently re-sold to. I used to run a similar Amiga Video Toaster database at amigauser.co.uk quite a number of years ago which expanded into a general Amiga database, hardware, serials and current location. However I found the system was just abused and that people came to the site and entered copious amounts of bogus information. I guess I thought that soliciting the info through forums like this, you would get a much more trustworthy info  Perhaps I'll rethink this and put it on the back-burner for a while...
That's why you have it so you have to approve posts. Maybe a good idea would be to require a photo as proof. There are two reasons why there's no record: 1. These items were sold to developers only, as a private sale so it's confidential info that Psygnosis isn't about to divulge. 2. When they left the developers, it was usually as liquidation stock, from an employee taking them or them being thrown in the trash. Nobody cared where they went! One problem you may have is that, although these items are so old they're not going to be chased down, you still have to remember that they were sold under NDA which would usually have given strict instructions about how to dispose of the items. Whilst it's very unlikely to happen with Saturn gear, if you were to ask people to come forward and state they have 360 dev gear, they might be scared that the list will fall into Microsoft's hands and they'll be getting a knock on the door.... Whilst it's quite interesting to see how many of a particular model of car exist from each production year with what paint schemes and what custom options etc., I don't know that it's all that exciting to know of every PsyQ unit in private hands. That said, I guess there's some interest in knowing rough figures of how many are there, how many are complete and to have details of the different versions, sure. It'll be interesting to see what you come up with, anyway. One thing you have to remember, though, is that a lot of these are still in Japan... and you have little hope of getting those registered!
