WARNING: I should mention that if you haven't seen Memories (and you should), there are some SPOILERS ahead. I don't know if anybody else here has seen it, but personally I am a big Katsuhiro Otomo fan and I've seen Memories about a thousand times. For those who don't know, it's a collection of 3 short films based on Otomo's stories. My favorite is Stink Bomb, but I've always been curious about what exactly the science is behind it. Perhaps somebody can help me. What I gather so far (and correct me if I'm wrong) is that the medicine Nobuo (the main character) takes causes him to emit extremely large quantities of CO2. The film never explicitly reveals this, but I infer it from the fact that plants everywhere are in bloom and oxygen-breathing animals are dying, apparently from suffocation. There a few things, though, that I don't understand (or are perhaps mistakes made by the writers): firstly, Nobuo emits enough CO2 or whatever it is to kill everything around him for hundreds of miles. I'm just guessing, but I believe that would take several tons of CO2 or nearly any other substance that's a gas in the Earth's atmosphere. Wouldn't it take a huge amount of energy to produce that much gas? How could one person possibly do that? Nobuo says at some point that he's extremely hungry, but that doesn't really explain it. Secondly, he's apparently able to control huge amounts of electricity. Again, that begs the question I already asked, but also how is that possible? How could a pill cause someone to emit electric bolts? It strikes me that all of this together, even if it were possible, would radically transform the person, causing him to look nothing like we would consider human. Nobuo, of course, looks perfectly normal. The film is sort of a comedy, so maybe I'm looking too much into things here, but maybe not. I guess ultimately I'm asking a larger question: is there actually some sort of scientific theory or theories backing all of this up, or is it just a flight of imagination? Is any of it even remotely possible?
It was made in Japan. They have movies about giant ants, mechs, you name it. I seriously doubt they would go through the trouble to explain why this guy had deadly lethal farts. EDIT: I'd say this is like asking what the science behind time travel or King Kong is.
