The Silent Hill thread... not sure if we already have one, couldn't find anything.

Until its exploitation as known as the fucked up 5th part of the series and the PSP / PS2 game, SH was to me what a wonderful Horror game was supposed to be.
Easy to play, incredibly terrifying and deep in atmosphere. I never liked Resident Evil as it looked to science-fiction to shock me, I consider it the Evil Dead 2 among horror games. Silent Hill is pure suspense, maybe some mixture of zombie/psycho horror movies. Rei aka Fatal Frame aka Project Zero certainly is the king, Mr. Ju-On ^^
I'm still a little afraid to buy this as it looks so fucking scary, on videos and even more on pictures (as they mostly capture these horrific faces that keep popping up).

Anyway, I'd like to compile a List of all Silent Hill games just for a summary of the series (shouldn't be too hard I guess).

Listed are all Japanese games in chronological order excluding budget re-releases:

    Silent Hill (PS)
    Silent Hill Taikenban (PS)
    Silent Hill Play Novel (GBA)
    Silent Hill 2 (PS2)
    Silent Hill 2 (XB)
Silent Hill 2: Saigo no Uta ≈ Maria-hen no Scenario tsuika Version (PS2)
    Silent Hill 3 (PS2)
Silent Hill 4: The Room (PS2)
Silent Hill (Mobile Phone. Port of the GBA game)
Silent Hill: The Escape (iPhone/iPod Touch)
Silent Hill: The Arcade (dedicated cab; PC-based; formerly "Longhorn")
    Silent Hill Zero (PSP)
Silent Hill Origins (PS2. PSP-port, never got a release in Japan)
Silent Hill Homecoming (PS3 + 360, no JPN release announced!!)

    to come:
Silent Hill - Shattered Memories (Wii in 2/2010)

Why do I post all this... well I just received SH 2, 3 and 4 as Japanese versions because they all have this wonderful option of complete English language availability :)oh:), so I decided to quit the relationsship to my PAL copies.

"It really isn't your fault, Maria. I just noticed we can't get along any more, people's interests change, you know."

"It's that Japanese slut, I saw how you looked at her! *sob*"

"Just think of it, you can find any gamer you want. You're still a great and beautiful game and-"

"Oh stop it you son of a bitch! Why don't you take me then? I'm not even graphically that much of a retro gimmick! *cry*"

    wtf

And I wanted to ask if Silent Hill 1 also offers the option of switching to English. I'd buy it immediately then, the only part I haven't played yet and it is considered one of the best if not the gem of the series even.

Playing Silent Hill for the first time made my heart skip some beats, so atmospheric. I never got into the sequels, though.

silent hills are still the most scary video games to date. at least for me. I liked part 2 & 3 on the PS2 the most. 2 was actually the most scary of all of em I have played, 3 was graphically very high standard for the PS2. the room was kinda dissapointing with its "2 times playthrough" concept.
recently (ok, over a year ago) ja have purchased me the Zero for PSP, but didn't play much far yet.

the silent hill 2 & 3 days were awesome. bought some bottles of whisky and played through them back to back with a good friend during a weekend.

i'm quite a big silent hill fan since day one and i must say the first one was or is still the best in my option. The atmosphere is just right it keeps the tension all the way, except the dialogs are a bit blunt, but then again
you cant chat like at a tea party if you are lookin for your daugher in a scary town. And the bonus content makes the game quite replayable.

i found the sencond one a bit boring, yes it has a deeper story than the first one but it doesnt have the scary tension like the first one.And the enviroment is quite small and little to explore and not realy a big selection of enenmies. Plus i found the game to easy and the piramid head was quite a lame boss fight, however it has a good replay value...specialy the ending on the platinum version.

the 3rd one i actualy prefer over the sencond one since its a bit of a sequel to the first one and it has quite a big enviroment to explore and the various bonus content (actualy the biggest in the series) makes the game replayable all the way...and the best alien ending in the series.

the room always gave that feeling like a game that was just slacked with the silent hill name to increase the sales...The story was dull and breakable content never was a good idea in a game and the romantic candles didnt help either with the chicks. The different endings were realy easy to achive and the replay value aint at a high point.

the origins kinda blow it with the switch on/off the evil zone and with that they took away the more or less powerfull tool, that made the sh games so scary.

homecoming i played just for a bit, but it felt like a g.i joe silent hill version so i kinda lost interest in playing it again.

and the remake kinda looks like it gonna be more ''Have you seen a little girl in designer jeans with a Pink DS....'' rather then Have you seen a little girl? Just turned seven last month... Short, black hair... My daughter.

I never knew the JPN versions had an English option, awesome!

I loved the 1st Silent Hill, one of the best in the genre IMO, I hated RE and Fatal Frame because I just found it too hard. I hate having to keep saving and going back to make every single bullet count etc...

Anyway since you had the PAL versions (which Im considering buying) do you remember if any have a PAL60/NTSC option?

To answer the TS question: No, the Japanese version of SH1 does not have an english text option. Spoken dialogue is in english though.

There's an Asian version of Homecoming (plays in English), but it doesn't work correctly on Japanese PS3. Homecoming has a fatal bug where the player is unable to progress the game because the button configuration handling is buggy.

By default, the game use the western button layout (X = confirm, O = cancel). Because the system library of the Japanese PS3 does this reverse, the player is unable to input the security code on the keypad early in the game due to X being both to mean Enter and Cancel. A sort-of workaround is remap buttons, it won't always work and you have to remap buttons everytime a new chapter or save game loads. That gets old real quick. Proves that region free does not mean region compatibility.

I'm still trying to find out if a Korean version of Homecoming exists with the same bug.

Exactly how i feel about the games, I played the original too many times to count either on my own or usually at my friends house and loved the atmosphere and the story but never did to play the sequels as much.

The sequels are probably great games but i'd rather sit down and play the origianl PS1 game which reminds me that i need to re-purchase that game again unless i still have my original copy from way back.

Never played any but started the second one a few weeks ago to have something to play for a few minutes when I'm bored.
Good stuff. Pyramid Head rape scenes caught me off-guard, definitely.
