I think you'll figure where I'm going with this one. I was talking with Johnathan Holmes from Distructoid last night about Wii Games since hell has frozen over and I'm going to get a Wii U somewhere down the line. During that convo I mentioned something called the Soul Calibur III effect. What that it is,is a Successful multi platform game's sequel going excluisve for a system that it probably shouldn't be on. Due to that annoucment there is a huge amount of backlash that kills the game sales. On top of that the game it self just feels off where it's prequels are solid the exclsuive sequel while still good just feels off. Sound famiular? Like Bayonetta 2 Which, is getting a sequel on a System it shouldn't be on, has a huge amount of backlash against it and Probably won't sell well because of it. The Soul Calibur series did continue from III but I don't think it ever did recover as IV and V were just sort of there. But when I started thinking about it I couldn't think of any other examples of the Soul Calibur IIII Effect. Can you guys?
I and II are probably the best ones. III was off for so many reasons, Going to the PS2 after the GC version was the best selling was one, the quest mode being removed was another and it just didn't feel right in that jump. The Soul Calibur Effect doesn't have to apply to games that didn't sell AS WELL either but before I name Final Fantasy VII as an example, I need to know if there was actually any backlash against Final Fantasy VII going to the PS1 in the first place. So Far the only real account I have of it is ONE PERSON on Facebook who talked like it was a widespread thing. But I've seen no evidence of people being upset about FFVII going to the PS1. But I think it can be said that after FFVI the series just wasn't the same.
It's part fanboys and part.... Nah, just pure fanboyism. For example, Bayonetta is one of those games that is basically a cult hit, it's not a blockbusters sales wise, and to be frank, all the people who are butthurt the sequel being Wii-U only will not buy a Wii-U because it's too kiddy. (Or something like that) Is it widespread? I don't think so. Most people are happy a single game is available on all competing systems because they won't need to buy another console just to play a single game they want. Hence the " bright idea" telling Nintendo to go pure 3rd party.
It wasn't. PS2 sold more. I'd blame the issues with SC3 more on it being a console first release then arcade. The expectations out of a Console only fighter differ wildly from an arcade game ported to consoles (where it's also had a few revisions during it's time in the arcade (SC2 had 3, SC1 I think had 2 or 3). SC3 AE came well after it's ps2 release and had only 1 version.
Yet alot of people were pissed that Soul Calibur 2 HD went to the 360 and PS3, But not the Wii U, everybody wanted link, or Twink elf boy or whatever. I see ALOT of people just pissed about that. Ironically HD and the Gamecube version of Soul Calibur 2 are the only versions I'm lacking and I did eventually buy Soul Calibur III and didn't really find it to be AS GOOD as Soul Edge, and Soul Calibur 1 and 2. How many memorible characters when in Soul Calibur after 2? I think Tira is the only one that really stands out. III had it's issues I think much of that does have to do with the platform it ended up on. Remember too that at one point Soul Calibur 2 was going to be Gamecube exclusive. Even if I get a Wii U and it's likely that when I wrap up my N64 and Gamecube collections I will move on to Wii and Wii U. I'm not so sure I'll get Bayonetta 2 and here's why. There's this feeling of castration That that dark batshit insanity of the first game is gone with this one, Plus Bayonetta's look isn't that sultry Stripper witch she was in the first game. As I feared the great Sega references seem to be replaced with generic Nintendo ones. It's more or less a game I loved but Nintendo got it's ass stank all over it and it's not the game I loved anymore. The best I can hope for now is for Suda 51 to make his own Stripper Witch game... Also Bayonetta was far from a flop it sold about 1.5 million copies. That's Twice what F-Zero GX a series I wish Nintendo would get off their ass and revive did. Stripper Witch also being the name of a Game a British friend of mine and I made up. Something I hope that through a connection I can pitch to Konami.
You mean a lot of nintendo fans were pissed. Regardless it's sales on Wii-U would have been awful. I don't think that was ever true (my memory might be fuzzy on it). The game was also running on PS2 hardware in arcades.
Yeah I can't find any info about it being GameCube Exclusive I also can't find sales numbers for each console.
I don't know why everyone hates on Soul Calibur III, it was a good game with tons of content. IV was also decent except for the stupid Star Wars characters. V on the other hand...the roster was shit and it had barely any modes thanks to Namco making that rip-off pay to win game which was obviously the old Quest mode except infested with microtransactions.
Maybe Resident Evil 0, 1 and 4 (until e3/fall 2004) for the Game Cube? Tales of Vesperia for the Xbox 360 at the time?
MAYBE on Resident evil 0 that one was never ported else where. I never bought it my self. Back Soul Calibur III it's not that the game sucks it's just off something just didn't feel right about it that RTS/map mode was no quest mode I prefer SCIII's character creation to IV and V's though. SC IV I played the hell out of it on XBOX and bought a fair share of DLC for it but lately I'm just not feeling it, Star Wars was way too out of place. SC V If Namco just finished the goddamn game it could have been the best installment. The Game it self is solid and fresh but the unfinished storymode, DLC based character creation (also a really boring one too) no real Arcade mode it was just unfinished in the same way KOF XII was unfinished. Solid Engine, shallow unfinished game.
Was there a big backlash on that one? I don't recally the spiderman games after Sega stopped making them being that good either. Also, Final Fantasy VII somebody I know suggests there was a backlash on that but I never found any proof of that. was there?
www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=728 I guess not. By the way Mario Kart GP is my favorite Mario Kart next to 64.
