http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/12/16/news_6115185.html Nothing new, although this part of the article is somewhat interesting: "The governor isn't relying on ESRB ratings to determine which games qualify for the ban. Instead, his office will establish a set of standards independent of the ESRB, a self-regulatory agency that has, for 10 years, rated games voluntarily submitted to it by software publishers. Where would the governor draw the line? Violent games would be defined as "those realistically depicting human-on-human violence in which the player kills, injures, or otherwise causes physical harm to another human, including but not limited to depictions of death, dismemberment, amputation, decapitation, maiming, disfigurement, mutilation of body parts, or rape." Sexually explicit games would be defined as "those realistically depicting male or female genitalia and other nudity exposed in a way that, in accordance with contemporary community standards, predominantly appeals to the prurient interest of the player." The likely penalty for violating the bans, the governor's office said, "would be a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in prison or a $5,000 fine." Wow, a year in jail for something so stupid, so pathetic, that it shouldn't even be concidered. Not only is he trying to ignore the ESRB (Which does a great job of keeping track of it), but to create his own form of the ESRB that the state has control over. So, what does that mean for those who live in Illinois if this passes? Basically, any game that has ANY reference to death would be labled a violent game, meaning games like FFXII, KOTOR, etc would be under that. Then again, these types of things pass like Kidney stones, so it isn't much of a threat.
our illustrious governor, or 'blago' as we call him, is just trying to get some national attention. the Illinois governorship is just a step stone to his ambitions. as far as "Sexually explicit games" ive never seen anything like that description in any game i own. the closest is probably DOA beach volleyball. and thats nothing worse than youd see at a half time show. one sensible idea outa all this is categorizing games at a retailer and rental. a kids game section i think is a good idea.
here at the sun i just got ahold of the disc the governor is passing out with the "content" I'll be taking screen shots and possibly hosting an image or torrent of it so you can all see what hes showing the populous (its a freely distributed disc, you just had to meet the governor to get a copy of it so its not illegal to share). Personally, I think its outrageous. People say they are too young to see what a military officer can do in a video game but in health class you get to watch "The miracle of Birth". As is watching blood and organic substances gush out of a woman's vagina of all places wasn't bad enough. Obviously a guy with a gun in a car is much more appauling.... I don't think so... I swear if I ever have to see the miracle of birth again I will cut myself until I'm dead, I didn't even want to see it in the first place. It's sick violent and digusting to me. Speaking of violent and disgusting, you know that wonderful drivers' ed. film on defensive driving, you know the one where the guy's head explodes and his brains leak onto the road? I'm sure thats much better to show our children than a woman's bust. If they want to restrict video games, they should restict gross educational films, sex education, let the kids experiment on their own WITHOUT condoms and see whats going to happen to society. Fact is, censoring things for our children is not the answer, not that I'll ever have children, but if I did, they would be free to see rated X films if they so desired. If they don't see it then, they WILL see it later. I can understand the effects of say a 9 year old seeing GTA, thats a close reality, but something like Mortal Kombat is pure Fantasy and they CAN dissern between reality and fantasy. The only thing I am concerned about is the profanity being used liberally. Curses are supposed to be reserved for words that need exponential meaning, not F this and F that on and on and on. If a child used profanity in a circumstance its proper to, I have no problems with that, but teaching them such liberal usage of it is wrong, why? Because if they make those words common place like shucks, or drat, what will be used to express themselves when its needed. It's all getting depreciated and though its not much of an issue that is my ONLY thing that I feel needs to be cut back on, and only so they can use the words as they were intended to be used. In conclusion, if a 9 year old wants to see some woman's breasts, if he has the ability to see them "appropriatly (ie not ripping off the shirt of some woman, but in a video) then let him. If they are old enough to want to see that kind of content and do, they are old enough to accept the responsability that content enthrusts to them. The parents need to be there to enforce the law with their child, censoring things is the lazy way out and will eventually lead to a less innovative shy unhealthy, close-minded culture. Think of it this way, if you didn't see the news, hear about the military, see games about it, read about it, or otherwise know about it other than it existed and they offered to pay your college tution for you if you joined, would you?
As promised, heres the DVD files: http://pkgingo.no-ip.com/files/ilgameban.rar.torrent Not even CSS protected burt on a DVD recordable LOL XD. The film is unaltered in ANY way other than compressed with winrar. So yes the video is THAT badly encoded. Just over 100 megs. To get and play this video you will need a bit torrent client (try azureus), winrar (rarlabs.com) to decompress the files, and a dvd player that can open a folder or play VTS_01_1.VOB on its own (I prefer videolan at videolan.org). Hope this shines some additional insight on the subject. I RARELY setup torrents so please let me know if it downloads.
There is no game where nothing dies or gets hurt or no good game at least. Also wouldn' this violate the first amendment? People have to right to drink, curse, smoke and watch violent/xxx movies, so why should a governor get the power to be able to intrude on that and say you can't play this because its violent?
in the eyes of the law we don't even exist until we are 18 (in most cases). As for the copy protection I just mentioned that because some places I post may get on my case saying that im breaking the DMCA yada yada circumventing protection etc and I didn't want to hear their annoyances so I just copied and pasted. I also forgot my warning, gomen ne... WARNING: This DVD image has video clips from the Guy Game and Liesure Suit Larry that include UNCENSORED parts of the human body. Be warned against watching this in a public place. Files are rared with winrar, and suggested video player is videolan. These clips are UNMODIFIED from their original form, the poor encoding is the fault of the governor.
