The what have you done for the Neo Scene Thread? Starring NGF and others!

Discussion in 'Neo Geo Discussion' started by The Arcade God, Jun 14, 2011.

  1. Everyone knows who has ran the Neo Scene for the last 13 years and it certainly has not been SNK. Super fans like Neo Geo Freak (Chris and Dion) and myself kept the Neo dream alive while SNK was drowning in debt from the failures of Hyper 64 and the recall of Neo Geo Pocket to the closing of SNK USA.

NGF has been slandered to the point that any noob goes on Neo-Geo.com and is instantly part of the angry mob who is asking for the peoples heads that they should be bowing down to. The same thing happens to me but on a larger scale now.

Lets point out what we as whole have done for the scene.

    Neo Geo Freak

1.Brought awareness to the Neo-Geo scene. Brought credibility and knowledge to a product that was considered a Niche Property.

Sold millions of dollars worth of AUTHORIZED merchandise.

    2. Legally obtained prototypes which were returned after the false accusations of SNK Playmore.

    3. Corrected inserts that otherwise were unprofessional and featured ENGRISH.

    4. Always backed up what they said including pictures , video and having only the rarest Neo Geo items for sale to the most hardcore NGF. If you were a BIG TYMER you had access to the good stuff.

    Japhei

    1. Sold millions worth of Arcade pcbs on ebay and online.

    2. Single handedly went out of my way to bring SNK Playmore branded Neo Geo MVS kits to the USA First usually months ahead of the other suppliers.

    3. Released several Neo Geo Protos publicly including the OFFICIAL Retail release of SVC Chaos.

    4. Helped with the Launch of SNK Atomiswave games. Sold hundreds of those kits helping transition SNK to next gen gaming platform.

Obviously us SUPER FANS are the reason Neo Geo is as popular as it is today. I am sure we are responsible for a majority of Neo Geo sales in the past 12-13 years.

I think the problem lies with the public because we are the faces of PROFIT on Neo Geo. We have taken our hobby and made it a business. But what kind of people would we be if we did not want to do a job that involved something we loved.

Consider what I have posted and then ask yourself.

What have you done for the Neo Geo Community?

Certainly not enough progress but plenty of bitching and complaining.

DO NOT HATE ON THE PEOPLE WHO KEEP THE SCENE ALIVE.

This thread is about contribution to the Neo-Geo scene not a flame war thread like the prior one.

If you have something constructive to add please feel free to. Keep the drama and hate on another childish site known for it.

What is it about the Neo Geo that brings out the drama and the inflated egos? It's like you guys can't just play videogames and talk about them, it has to be some kind of self-aggrandising ego trip lifestyle choice. Being on the outside looking in, let me tell you, it's pretty fucking weird.

I have no idea who you are, by the way, never heard of you or your ebay account, so this is honestly nothing personal - I have no clue if you're a scammer or not. Just an observation on the scene in general.

  3. Just a fan that wants the truth out there. Tired of people distorting it.

I would like people to back up their scammer claims with receipts with my NAME on it. Paypal keeps records of every transaction.

The receipt should state my full name along with item , amount paid and the date. Otherwise the scammer claim is false and the witch hunt is meaningless.

I just play the games and want as many people to enjoy the same games that I do. I am a gamer first and a businessman second.

    yea...

I'm glad I somehow missed out on the neogeo....

If this thread leads to more archive photos of jersey shore cast looking people trying to prove they invented the "duck face" I'll at least check back for a laugh.

If everyone made copies of their posts in multiple threads this forum would be a jumbled mess, Dion. We heard you the first time.

    Sorry about the "double post."
I deleted it from the other thread and posted it here, as it seemed to fit better in this thread.

As for Casey's post and neogeo drama or ego, it wasn't always the case.
When we (NGF) started in 1996/1997, the neogeo scene it wasn't the big mess it is today.

The mess, confusion, drama, and fighting all are products of ng.com. Even their front page promotes "stay for the drama." Ng.com members are encouraged to attack people and post slurs, which is very childish.

ng.com attacked Chris, myself, and NeoGeoFreak for years.
After we left the business in 2004, Casey/Japhei came into the scene and showed unreleased/proto neogeo games. ng.com members started attacking Casey for no reason.

So years later, when people like Casey, Chris, or myself come back to the scene, we feel we need to tell everyone who we were and give our side of the story. Mentioning our contributions is further details on our passion and contribution to the neogeo scene, and not to be taken as bragging.

They say exactly the same about NGF, obviously.

I can't really take this seriously when it's written in the same post as you bragging yet again about how many views your thread has received. You and I clearly have different ideas about what constitutes boasting, though, as I think you're grossly guilty of it in practically every one of your posts. The irony is that if you addressed this, toned down the whole "it's the Dion Dakis Show!" thing, you probably wouldn't elicit such widespread negative reactions from people. I know that advice will fall on deaf ears and you'll carry on believing they're all just crazy/jealous/childish/whatever else, though.

Anyway, sounds like "The Arcade God" (who could also use a lesson in humility) has been banned or soon will be, so hopefully this can all simmer down and the drama can return to its rightful claimants at ng.com.

It's this bit that always sticks in my craw:

Instead of making the Neo scene accessible to everyone which both Dion and this Casey fella claim, all they've really done is made it this elitist playground for the incredibly rich or incredibly rich and stupid. Anyone who's been burned by them in the past has no-one to blame but themselves for buying into the bullshit in the first place.

All these 'collectors' who've spent exorbitant sums on games and merchandise just to secret it away from prying eyes are the baddies in this story. It's these people who've made the Neo scene the abortion it is, and granted Dion et al have played more than a cursory part in all this but let's be honest, without the initial demand there'd be no room in the market for companies like NGF.

Me too, feels 'cleaner' than some of the later King of Fighters titles and while some characters are badly weighted (what's new there?) it seems much more rounded as a whole.

I'd certainly be interested to hear the real story behind the SvC release too.

As a game how is it? I'd like to get it if it's decent.

The only thing I have ever read on any site about Japhei is that he ripped people off and stole their money. It's the main reason people are scared to deal with newbs located in Tampa. Other than that, I've never heard his name go along with anything positive for the neo hobby, ever. There is a reason he gets banned from most sites as soon as admin finds out it's him.

As for NGF, I only heard about the magazine and the insert shredding thing. No real bad feelings towards those guys personally.

Casey on the other hand is a known thief.

So am I reading this right then, that all the Capcom vs SNK: SVC Chaos MVS kits out there were either NOT manufactured by SNK, or if they were they were either never officially released or intended for release? Seems a little strange to me. I bought a brand new MIB kit from Yaton back in 2007 and it was identical in every way to my other full kits at the time so what's the full story?

Im not a fan of Neo Geo, except i kind of have interest in Metal Slug series, but other than that this company is kinda fail, have they ever successful made anything that was actually popular and made sales? NO they didnt.

Their consoles were overpriced, and their handhelds were hardly worth mentioning, fuck is SNK** even around anymore!?

The system has a lot of really good games. Sure Metal Slug is the flagship, but many of my all time favorites are on the Neo Geo. Blazing Star, Top Hunter, Big Tournament Golf, Twinkle Star Sprites, Real Bout Fatal Fury Special, and a hand full more. There are plenty of duds on the system too and the price tag of home carts has a lot to do with the lack popularity. Good thing popularity has nothing to do with a game being good.

SNK was a big hit in the arcades with their Neo Geo MVS system, so yes: they were both successful and popular.
To me the MVS is the best way to get into Neo Geo. The games are affordable and there are plenty of high quality titles in the library.
The AES scene is more of an acquired taste because of the pricetags that some of the games carry, the same games can be had for a fraction of the price on MVS instead.

If I'm not mistaken when the MVS kit was first released Japhei was the first person to offer them for sale, which was a rather dramatic turn of events.

Any elaboration on this by anyone? AFAIK SNKP had no intention of a MVS cart release at first, so obviously if something like this negotiations had to take place with people that had names/positions. Stipulations? Number of carts produced?

Seems like that thing came out of left field, dropped, and nobody knew anything other than it was there.

I think Japhei only paid for more expensive shipping in order to have the carts first. A week later, over distributors started to offer it as well.

    edit:

Check the video of Japhei showing his Ironclad proto:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-Lj52ZaHhM

Notice it was before the wii rom release

It has CD arranged soundtrack.
