The Wii Shop died January 30th. All service is officially cut. The Wii is dead. Shoot I remember when this thing was brand new, but the wiishop has lived for an impressive 14 years. I suppose it’s time.

It’s a shame that I didn’t really realize how much of a retro game console powerhouse the Wii actually is until after they stopped allowing you to purchase Wii points. You can play the 1st three iderations of Super Smash on this console (not to mention project m and other mods.) You can play a very decent amount of nes, snes and N64 games on this console, the latter being the most significant considering there is no n64 classic coming anytime soon. When you stop to think, it’s a very impressive console even to today’s standards.

Of course, that’s all gone now. Except it’s not. If you have never installed the Homebrew channel, now is the time my friends. In addition to the entire Wiishop being leaked on the internet at this point, all the homebrew emulators available for the Wii (GBC/GBA, nes, snes, Virtual Boy, Ps1 and more) PLUS Wii ware exclusive titles, not to mention the handful of Wii exclusive titles that are fantastic (like punchout and brawl for example) I might argue that the Wii is the definitive console for retro gamers at this moment. It is really amazing what you can do with your Wii now. It’s ironic, but now that the Wii Shop is dead, I’ve finally blown the dust off my Wii and have been using it more than any of my other consoles.

If you haven’t already, check it out, especially if you prefer to have everything in one place.

I’ve said my piece about the Wii. R.I.P. Wii Shop.

RIP Wii Shop. I Miss the days where I could browse the Wii shop, or spin the globe around in the weather app. Alas, those days are gone..

Maybe I should mod my Wii.. I was just playing it the other night, love me some Bit Trip (which still controls best on the Wii)

Anyone who didn't have a Wii with the Homebrew Channel back in the day was missing out. Hands down the greatest and most versatile console I've ever owned. From emulation to a media server/streaming, Youtube/Netflix etc on your TV (have to remember Roku and Amazon Fire didn't exist back then), Gamecube/Wii piracy on external hard drives; it was incredible.

I remember back in the day I made a thread on here with some disk drive problems, Assembler himself helped me out with fixing my wii. If it wasnt for you guys and this amazing forum, I probably wouldnt be into the restoration, preservation and lost media communities. I love you guys and hope to have many more memories on my favorite forum. The wii truly is an amazing console

This reminds me of 2010 when the original Xbox had it's live servers turned off. If I remember correctly, there were some lads playing Halo 2 for as long after the cut off as possible. One by one they all got kicked and it was gone forever.

That''s the downside to having online systems now. Eventually, it's servers will get turned off and with it, a lot of stuff will disappear for good.

Next turn off is 2020 (I believe) when the 360's online existence will be relinquished.

You're right. But, as a PC gamer, it's almost impossible to avoid it now. GoG doesn't have any DRM and (supposedly), should Steam ever go bust, they've claimed they'll remove their DRM.

You're right. I'm not a PC gamer myself, so I didn't think of that :)

I had a Wii with a WODE - remember those? and an impressive hard drive full of games....
I had to leave it all behind when I left...
Shame as I miss that little white brick....

My view about the Wii is that it was okay. It wasn't that great, and it's far from Nintendo's best system, but I also think that it doesn't deserve a lot of the criticism it gets. I think it's underrated. It doesn't have a lot of games that really interest me, but the ones that do are generally really good. It's true that a lot of games used motion controls in a gimmicky kind of way, but others actually made very good use of them. Similarly, a lot of games had rather shitty graphics – because the devs were lazy – but others looked pretty good, and made good use of the system's hardware.

Playing emulators and stuff like that on the Wii has no appeal to me, since my PC can do that far better; and in general, I tend to want to play games on original hardware anyway. The main appeal of the Wii, for me, is the selection of pretty good exclusives it has.
