Shameless self promotion and copy + paste of text from other forums: So due to lack of reviews for X68000 games other than Castlevania I've created a blog that collates the few reviews that are out there. I've linked other peoples reviews, and added the reviews I've done so far. There is a side bar where you can select the entry for the game in question. I've done a few games so far, Nemesis, R+R, Tinna and Etoile Princesse. Got a fair few more in the works though - Naious, Code Zero, Angel Dive etc. Also got a beginner's emulation guide to revise a little and put up. I'd like other people to contribute reviews, but I'm not holding my breath. I'd like to add youtube vids too, but can't view them on my connection so that may have to wait for now. Its early days yet, only made it last week so there isn't a vast amount of my own content on yet, but I've pretty much added all other people's reviews I can find. If anyone knows of any others let me know. The reviews I did on there are my first and only reviews, so might be a bit crap, therefore comments/criticism would be welcome. You can't go wrong with the X68000. One of the first truly home arcade game systems. The amount of arcade perfect or near perfect conversons on the X68000 blows away anything else of the time.
Hi there new to Assembler forum:thumbsup: though obviously I know you.. Yakumo after having followed your cracking Retro core for donkeys and bought Saturn shiz off you back in the day.lol Re the x68000, though I agree with you on the quality of the ports.. it had an unfair advantage over the home consoles of the time.. being a p.c. with very similar internals to the x68000 jamma boards of the 80's some of which were upgradeable..ram cpu speed etc. I wonder if any of you techies can tell me how the Amiga iterations stacked up against the x68000 internally? i.e. what it was capable of render wise? say if the conversions were handled in japan.
Thats perfectly true, Capcom did their CPS1 development on X68000s so porting was easy enough, hence their ports are perfect. Problem is that aspect is pretty much the only thing covered when English speakers write about/play on the X68000. Hence the reviews I do will only cover the many awesome original and/or exclusive games it has, as suggestions are thin on the ground. In fact I only found two very short reviews on original shooters for it. The system has about 30-40 retail shmups on it, and another 60 or so doujins (those dumped at least), many from both sides being fantastic. IMO it is above the PCE in terms of quality shooters. Leeboy2k1, I'm no techie so don't know if they are accurate, but found this info on a page: "512x512x16Bit or 1024x1024x4Bit" There are many different video cards for it though, so it may depend on whats in the machine.
Some of the great Mega Drive Wolf Team games started life on the X68000. Granada sperings to mind. The X68000 version had a kick arse intro as well. I do prefear the Mega Drive audio mind you.
It wasn't a link mate, but it was from this page: http://www.ann.lu/comments2.cgi?view=0949421272&category=news However I wouldn't say hand on heart it is accurate though, as it is from 2000. Lots of er..'layman' comments on there, but not too surprising considering Wikipedia etc wasn't around then. Yakumo: Not heard the MD version's soundtrack but I imagine they're not too dissimilar as both systems have similar audio set ups? I'm not really a fan of Wolf Team's games bar Granada and Sol Feace. Good music, but often gameplay is lacking in some areas.
