That whole ''The DS is not the successor to the gameboy Advance, but a third console'' was simply self protection, in case the whole DS backfired on Nintendo in a similair way to the Virtual Boy. So don't get your hopes up, if a new handheld appears from Nintendo it will be one that is the successor to both the GBA and the DS, and not to one of them individually.
Right, this is going offtopic so I'll make my point clear: these rumors about a HD Wii are most likely for a minor upgrade in the form of a standalone version of the console, much like what the GBC was. Will it use an upscaler? or a new GPU? who knows, but if I've to bet on something is that nintendo will make you buy a new Wii just for the HD. After all, they are making you buy the GC again just for the Wiimote, and at a premium price:lol:
subsequent announcments from the mouth of Iwata himself, declared the GameBoy line of name *dead*. DS will be taking the flag from now on. In that sense, another "GameBoy" will be released, in the same way the DS is a (type of) "GameBoy". Don't expect to hear the GameBoy name again any time soon though on official nintendo products.
Dunno, maybe the next DS will be called the "Gameboy DS" so they dont have to throw away such a known trademark... On the other hand, gameboy sounds kinda cheesy, while DS is more neutral/mature...
Least likely. I have only heard this rumour from you and no where else. There is no precedent for this from Nintendo so it is unlikely it will occur just because HD is the new thing. If you mean the successor to the Wii will be a HD device then it's a no brainer, but the technology will be mature by then. That's assuming Nintendo release another console, that is (excluding hand-helds)
There's a SOURCE at the end of the first post, and theres the BIG rumor of the DVD Wii which. Honestly I'll rather pay for a HD Wii than a DVD one. Dunno, if the Wii mantains a moderate level of sales (thats it, if it doesnt gives ninty a loss) then I'm sure nintendo will keep this idea of a low-end console with a different gameplay approach
I m being a technical dick, but it's my job. A new product means to replace an older product. A parallel product means a product that does not directly replace or compete with the original product A DVD playing Wii is a parallel product , in the same manner that the HiSatrun GPS NAVI, The Panasonic Q, or the AIWA megadrive (Cant remember official number, I summon Yakumo) are parellel products, offering expanded, non-game related services - the same could be said for non compulsory add-ons , such as the HD-DVD for X360. A *new* product would constitute something along the lines of GBAsp replacing the GBA, and the GBAmicro replacing all its previous bretherin (to a negiotable degree, since it dropped off backward compatibility) To wrap this mess up, I say that a DVD playing Wii, is a parallel product, which will co-exist with the regular Wii. If nintendo chose to release a Wii with HD capabilities (i.e high resolution beyond 480p), it would create as much confusion in its market as the 32x did back when it was released so close to the release of the Saturn. In the same way, nintendo by releasing an HD Wii, would confuse audiences. Arguably, this is beyond "adding light" as was seen on the Gameboy Light, another parallel product. As such, although it is not impossible for them to do so, Nintendo, being the safe-walking Jack we all know, would not risk fragmenting the market in my view.
That move was made in the event that the DS bombed. That way, the GameBoy line could continue on, untainted. The DS was a gamble that worked, but now the situation they have is that the venerable Gameboy name is competing with the DS...an odd dilemma.
apprarently Iwata retracted his earlier statement, regarding the "demise" of the GameBoy: http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=12748&rp=49
Maybe nintendo doesnt believes in the Wii as a mass market success, but more like a console that wont crash and burn. Plus I can see nintendo releasing a GBA2 to compete with the PSP when the DS graphics start to look crappy...
Personally, I really hope they do release an HD Wii. I'm on the fence about getting one now because I find it hard to justify buying a GameCube with a new controller and slightly modified hardware when I already have one. The addition of HD, at least if they implement true HD and not just upscaling, is at least a step towards the next generation. I'm a bit worried, though, that if they did release an HD Wii that it would only work with specially made "HD-ready" games.
It probably will happen (like the GBC-only games) since it takes biggers textures and other things to work...
I was thinking the same thing, then I read the entire thread and am able to say that it is all opinion and rumor. If you're not interested in that then just back off easy.
