I've noticed prices dropping fast since the "new" 3DS launched, and I've always wanted to play Ocarina on a handheld. What's a reasonable price to pay for a new or used XL in USA / Canada right now? I've seen one listed as very good, complete in box for $135 CAD.
oh man, now is pretty much the worst time to pick up the 3DS to play Ocarina of time, pricing of the game have been soaring ever since Gateway release the game exploit. Bad bad timing... unless.... unless u already have a copy of it already. =P
Ocarina of Time is $40 + sales tax on the Nintendo eShop, which is less of a hassle than hunting for the actual cartridge. Surely there are easier ways of playing this game anyway. ie the Wii.
But Ocarina of Time 3D is a far superior version than the N64/GCN versions and is a far better experience. Things load faster, it's got better visuals, the framerate is improved (30fps is kinda "...eh" but still better than the original's 22fps or whatever), and it makes the Iron/Hover Boots items instead of equipment (as in you press a button to take them on or off instead of needing to wait on OoT's positively anciently slow menu everytime you want to take off the Iron/Hover Boots). Plus it seems that OP's looking specifically to play Ocarina of Time on the go, and as I've said, OoT3D's a fine way to go about it. Plus the 3DS has a pretty nice library aside from that. @OP: if you do get a 3DSXL and OoT3D, don't miss out on Majora's Mask 3D either. It's way more different from the original than Ocarina of Time 3D was from OoT. Some bleh choices, but overall it's great.
I personally save for a N3DS really... I only say this because who knows how long the 3DS will be supported for. There might be a N3DS Zelda exclusive in the future.
Wait, really, Ocarina of Time 3D is rare? How was it used as a Gateway exploit? The latest exploit was browser-based. I'm so confused. Oh, also, they patched some of the browser exploits in 9.5, so don't update your old 3DS or 3DS XL if you're not on 9.5 already (especially if you want to inject Pokemon or, you know, still need to fix your save because it corrupted on you for no reason). Anyway, like HEX1GON, I highly recommend you go for a New 3DS. I have an original 3DS and it's total garbage - it's basically a beta test. I've never felt so ripped off by hardware in my life (although I didn't buy a DS Lite, either, which was made from some of the crappiest plastic ever). My brother has a 3DS XL and it's better, but all the system menu navigation is painfully slow. From what I've heard, it's quite a bit faster on the New 3DS. Plus, certain features are locked out (full system menu access whilst in-game when playing Smash Bros.) on the older consoles. Honestly, the price difference seems negligible enough (but then again, that's NZ prices I'm going by). Getting an AC adapter is a royal pain in the ass though. I heard they're pretty cheap over there. They're expensive over here. Then again, they haven't included them with new systems starting with the original XL here, so it's a moot point.
Yeah, OoT is not that common, but the price has been jacked up due to Gateway using it as an exploit in order to make Gateway run on New Nintendo 3DS. Fortunately they made the same exploit compatible with Cubic Ninja. But that game isn't exactly common either. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJHfpLh36sQ
Just found out after I posted that. That's so crazy. Cubic Ninja was a cheap game that wasn't often cheap in New Zealand, but when I had a bit of spare money, I was going to pick up a copy just because it'd be a cheap game for 3DS to try out (plus free Club Nintendo points - not that that matters now). Then, smea happened. Ugh. I'm sick of all these hacks making games impossible to get. Hell, in the realm of Vita, Sony just completely removes the exploitable PSP games from PSN. Even if you've bought them before, they get removed from your download list, so that you'll never be able to get them back ever again, and Sony won't refund you because screw the consumers. On one hand, I appreciate that hackers are trying to add features to these consoles that don't have enough support from their creators as far as OS functionality, but on the other hand, they're also helping rampant piracy which I don't care for at all.
At least with the OG Xbox and the Wii they used really popular games for exploits (Splinter Cell and Brawl)
The New 3DS XL is a far better console - I'd save up for one of those. The screen is much nicer, the start buttons are nicer, there's the extra buttons/stick, headphone socket is less in the way.... If you want Ocarina, you'll either have to pay Nintendo full price or... well, actually, you're not going to get it cheap. Unless you buy the Ocarina console bundle... but that wasn't an XL, was it? And cheap limited edition consoles are nearly always scratched.
You might be able to find OoT on standard price and maybe even cheaper..... Just not on the usual channels, try some local gameshops and maybe even thrift shops.
Gamestop even sells Ocarina 3D for more used than the original MSRP. It's a bunch of malarkey. http://www.gamestop.com/browse?nav=16k-The+Legend+of+Zelda+Ocarina+of+Time+3DS
Don't worry, Ocarina of Time isn't popular. To be fair, Microsoft is just as bad. I've spent timing having a go at them on the phone before, with no real solution other than them cancelling my Xbox LIVE subscription (which is actually what I wanted to do, but it was very, very difficult just to get that done, and I had to ring them to do it - this was about five years ago now, I think). Yeah, I hate when retailers bump prices up because things are in demand. That's not how retailers are meant to work. Bunch of scumbags.
Customer service is non-existent these days. If you get no where with one operator, hang up and call again. It matters who you're speaking to, not the company really. Just I view Sony more of a fuck up. Nearly everything I've owned by them hasn't really lasted. Probably just my luck, but it affects my view. Some would say the same about Microsoft..
Ok, easy to get games. Brawl is still pretty easy to find (not cheap, but easy to find), and Splinter Cell can easily be had for about $5 USD
