    Hey.

I'm thinking of buying a newer console. My main dispute is: 3ds/3ds xl/2ds/ps3

What are the newer games I want to play? Ni no kuni, bravely default, final fantasy games, maybe a mario title?
What I've been using up to this point? Modded Wii and a DS Lite. The Wii I've used for nes/snes emulation, and the DS for actual DS games.
Me: I like nintendo games, i can read hiragana/katakana, know ~200 kanji. But I'm a fan of a good rpg, action game, not a fan of first person shooters etc.

I was leaning towards the 3ds xl from the start, so I can play all my ds games on a bigger screen and the newer 3ds games, but the price is kinda what always scared me away from newer consoles. The other thing is: I have vision only in one eye - so no 3d for me (but my wife could've probably enjoy the 3d gimmick, and it could convince her into gaming some more). That's why I thought I'd get the 2ds cause it's 2x cheaper than a 3ds xl, but then again, it's screens are almost the same size as a 3ds. There's also the form factor that doesn't really convince me. Then I saw there is a Ni no Kuni game in English for ps3. But then again I thought I could import the DS version and try to up my japanese by playing it. So now I'm really confused what to get :) Can anyone recommend any good exclusive titles that could win me over?

I'm more partial to console games, so I'm going to go with the PS3. So many awesome console exclusives (Uncharted 1-3, The Last of Us, Twisted Metal, Katamari, etc.) Also if you find a BC PS3 you can have access to Final Fantasy 5-13. Although it seems like the 2DS might be your best option given what you've said. I personally haven't owned a handheld since my regular DS and PSP 1001, so I guess I can only partially represent consoles.

I already finished katamari forever - bought the game, and borrowed a ps3 from a friend who had it back then (about 2 years ago). The rest of the games you mentioned, just don't look interesting to me. The 2ds would really be a good option, but the screens are the same size as a ds lite, so I would use it only for the 2-3 exclusives i'd like to play.

Hmm, have you given the Wii U some thought? I know you didn't mention it, but it seems as though you might like it.

If you like RPG's, Shin Megami Tensei IV for 3/2DS is nice exclusive. Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is another great exclusive.

Persona 5 is coming out for PS3 next year though.

TBH, both of those systems have a good share of RPG's. PS3 probably has better actions games though.

If you can read Japanese and are down, I'd go with a PS3 just because unlike the WiiU and 3DS family, it's region free. Import away!

I wouldn't bother using the 3DS XL for DS games to be honest. The picture (when the games are fullscreen) is quite blurry and not that good looking.. Or you can hold a button during boot of the game to make the game stay at the correct resolution, which makes playing DS games on it pointless, considering it's exactly the same screensize as the DS. If you want to play DS games on a bigger screen, I'd say go for a DSi XL, but that's only for the bigger screens. The Wii U has already started getting DS games on the eshop now. They released Brain Training a few weeks ago.

A PS3. I've got a 3DS and it's pretty crap. I may be using it wrong but I say the Vita is better.

With CFW, a PS3 is even better, but even vanilla you've still got a decent amount of things to do. PS1 games, PS2 (if it's B/C), PS3, and not to mention blu-rays (if you have a HDTV).

Plus, Kingdom Hearts 2.5 later this year, Persona 5 next year <3

The DS games look great on 3DS XL. I can post some of my own pictures if you'd like. Also, where I have a PS3 with CFW, I can assure you that the 3DS isn't "crap". However of course it loses to an all out console. Get a used 3DS, they're cheaper than a 2DS and 100% more your time. I have friends that work at Gamestops in 2 different cities and they said that anyone that's bought a 2DS has returned it or sold it because of the shoulder buttons.

Really? The shoulder buttons weren't the issue for me, it was the whole shape of the thing. Like the touch screen would be around your wrists.

But I do like my 3DS, the DS games I've never seen a problem with, and the 3D is entirely optional.

Thanks! Could you do some pics of 2d ds games on a 3ds xl? Personally if I'd buy the ps3 it'd only be for rpg titles, and if i recon there's not that many?

in terms of the screens on the 3DS/XL
the big screen on the XL is nice, but the screen on the 3DS looks nicer especially if your using the 3D (i understand you wont be but just thought it worth mentioning XD)
also if you get a 3DS or 3DS XL that is on firmware version 4.5 or lower you can enable region free which only requires the use of a NDS compatible flash to enable, that would open up your options for games from any region

if you did go for the PS3 you might also consider looking to get a cheap DSi XL which has a similar screen size to the 3DS XL but will only play the NDS games of course, but if there was no 3DS games you wanted in particular it might be a nice option to consider so you can get both a ps3 and play NDS games on a bigger screen

Thats not true about 4.5 or lower opening up NDS compatible flash carts. All flashcarts that play NDS roms work even up to the highest firmware (I know, I own ACE3DS Plus). 4.5 and lower is only for the Gateway and other 3DS specific flash carts that play 3DS roms and those 3DS's that are on 4.5 or lower are mindbogglingly expensive right now. Follow @smealum on twitter, he's been tweeting and blogging for the past year (it seems like) about his exploit that still works on the highest firmware. He finally announced it will be out here in August. He said no piracy, only homebrew and emulators, but we all know someone will reverse engineer his work and make it play ROMS (not that anyone cares about piracy when 3DS games are so inexpensive anyhow). Also, he suggested that it's like a HEN (homebrew enabler) like what the PSP had. Where every time your device dies or gets turned off, you have to retrigger the exploit. However, if you keep it charged or never turn it off you won't run into that. But he also said it takes all of 5 seconds to trigger the exploit and best of all it should be FREE!

if you read over it again i meant for specifically enabling region free, smealum has said he is looking into enabling region free with ssspwn(the exploit for higher than 4.5) but as ssspwn is not out and we don't know for sure if it will enable region free, 4.5 already allows region free 3ds games and only needs a NDS flashcard to play the retail 3ds carts region free but it does use the firmware files from the gateway card, but does not specifically require you to buy the gateway card if you only want region free with retail carts

yeah there are 3ds specific flashcards but im not sure if assembler games likes talk about current gen flashcards and such which is why i omitted that detail

as for NDS only carts they can work even on the latest FW version depending on what card you own
