On the XBox 360 and PS3 boards, people are already discussing what they think was this generation's best game, even though there are still some great games yet to come for current consoles, plus it's not like the 360 or PS3 are going to die as soon as the XBox 1 (stupid, STUPID name) or PS4 comes out.

Then again, since consoles nowadays are so often online, maybe Microsoft will send out a special code and every XBox 360 will commit suicide, forcing the players to buy the next XBox... :concern:

Anyway, what game do you think is the best game this generation, on any machine? And since the PC and Mac don't really have generations, certainly not parallel to the consoles, let's call this generation 2005 to the present day).

Personally, I'd say Batman: Arkham City is the best game this generation. It's a fantastic mix of story, characterisation, stealth, exploration, and ultra-violence, and it's both very enjoyable and replayable. Batman: Arkham Asylum is almost as good (even better storywise), but City is better overall, I think.

Bioshock 2 is excellent (Bioshock 1 is nearly as good, Bioshock: Infinite not nearly so, and to me was a huge dissapointment), as is Read Dead Redemption. Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 were great (not yet played 3), as were Halo 3, Halo Reach, and Halo 4 (didn't much like Halo: ODST), Portal 2 (and Portal 1, if it counts as a current generation game), The Saboteur, Singularity, LittleBigPlanet 1 and LittleBigPlanet 2, Vanquish and Skyrim. Limbo was a nice little game too, though I thought Braid was very over-rated.

It's been a good generation for games, but I do think the previous generation (XBox/Gamecube/PS2) was better overall. Then again, we still have GTA V, Watch Dogs, Batman: Arkham Origins, and Thief 4, amongst many others, to look forward to on this generation's hardware, so it's too early to judge, really.

Final Fantasy Crisis Core-my favorite of this gen
    Yakuza 4
Gears of War 2: as a third person shooter, the single player campaign is amazing. Its like they threw every idea they could think of that didn't make it into gears 1 into the sequel. The third game could not compete with how epic 2 was.
    Sonic Generations
    Metal Gear Rising
GTA 4: definitely the best lead character of this gen, Niko. Also has my favorite intro of this gen with the song by Glukoza as Niko arrives in America. Perfection.

Out of the ones I've played so far, I'm inclined to say GTA 4 also. Loved it.

It's a toss up between Twilight Princess, Bioshock and Limbo for me. That short list just shows how much of a disappointment this generation has been to me.

    Bioshock gets my pick.

    Other strong contenders:

    Fallout 3
    Dark Souls
    Halo 3
    Bayonetta
    Batman: Arkham City
    Journey

I might have considered Mass Effect, but after ME 3 its hard to care about that universe anymore.

The 2 games ive played most however were Borderlands 2 and Street Fighter 4 series, with both around 600 Hours each.

Dark Souls 2 is also still a contender, depending if/how much they dumb it down. The Visuals, Animations, textures so far look 10x better.

I'm going to have to think on this one. I'm pretty sure, my answer will eventually be GTA V (once it comes out), however, I must name a contender in my mind that I think I'll get some flak for.

When Call of Duty 2 first came out on Xbox 360, I was truly blown away. As much as I loved playing Halo with friends at that point, COD really changed the game for me (pun intended). It was like the torch being handed to Halo back in 2001 after being with GoldenEye since 1997.

Another contender would have to be the Xbox 360 version of Hitman: Blood Money. That was the first Hitman game I ever played and let me tell you there was no turning back. I played Contracts, Silent Assassin, Codename 47, and eventually when it came out Absolution. I love them all, but, Blood Money will always be my favorite. Absolution did keep you on sort of a linear path (which all games do now, which is unfortunate, I don't mind it with some games but come on), but again I did enjoy Absolution very much, but, the freedom with Blood Money was just unsurpassed. The level design, controls, and A.I. were all great and to be honest I feel like those are lacking in a lot of today's games.

Bioshock, Red Dead Redemption, Metal Gear Solid 4, Batman Arkham City, Metro:Last Light, Skyrim, No More Heroes, Halo 4, The Last of Us & Donkey Kong Country Returns made me stay up all night playing them. Very few games do that for me.

But overall, If I had to pick one game that represented the 360/PS3/Wii era, it'd be the original Bioshock. A masterpiece imho. Very few FPS are like this game. To me, it always felt more like a first person cinematic experience than a first person shooter.

I liked Sonic Generations also. Definitely Brought back Sonic for me. LA Noire was good just not as good as I expected, Loved Heavy Rain, pleased by LoZ Skyward Sword, and the Saints Row series was just over the top fun. Borderlands 1&2 were awesome and Portal 2 was pretty damn fun as well. Lots of great games this gen and it isn't even over. Pretty sure GTA V has the chance to top every other game for this era.

Probably from the point of view of what it has done to make small developers respectable.... minecraft.

Minecraft made being an indie dev not sound desperate or foolish for once.
