I'd love to create my own little gaming archive. I'm pretty anal about the condition my hardware/software is in too......even if I play the hell out of something I try to make it look as pristine as possible.
isnt the version of ultima he holds up the one that is impossible to find and went for a ton a few years back?
I cringed when I saw the clip. The Standford fuck claiming to be preserving this collection should be fired. Preservation? He fucking stores the stuff in carton boxes! Next time some prankpulling cunt sets of the fire alarm the shit will be soaked by the sprinklers. From what I saw a portion of the games in magnetic media based. These should be in shielded boxes in order to remain readable. There are also didn't appear to be suffiicient, or indeed any, padding between individual game boxes. Each time a game is pulled from the box or put back the packaging will get increasingly more scuff-marks. Also, notice how he just carelessly tossed that ultima game packaging back in the box? If this is a measure of how Standford will be handling them I have little faith they will be long-term preserved. Really, this stuff is depressing.
You should note it's not stored on the campus. It's in storage somewhere else. But I agree if they were serious about preservation they should be doing alot more.
There is a chance that those were the containers they were moved in and they'll be storing them more securely once as they catagorise them. I'd chalk his mishandling to being filmed.
