I do like FPS games but for some reason I've never played Halo before. I do actually own many FPS games. As for the BluRay cases, that won't stop them putting holes in to the case since many of my American BluRays have holes cut in to them as well. Cheap ass bastards!
Packaging sucks nowadays. I'm a PC guy so I love old PC Big Boxes and a lot of the games came with a shit ton of stuff. One of my personal favorites is Elite II Frontier in that regard. Check it out: http://s5.postimage.org/3ndgtirhj/P1040309.jpg You got: - The Game (Obviously) - 106 pages long Manual (Which was essential to learn how to play!) - A Gazeteer, which gives you info on the inhabited star systems ( This doesn't have any effect on gameplay really other than setting a world, immersion!) - Stories of Life on the Frontier ( This is simply amazing. Short stories that take place on the game world and they all connect in the final story. 82 pages long!) - Galactic map (Which is HUGE!) - Quick Start guide (Technical supplement pretty much) There are quite a few others that totally rock as well, perhaps I'll take a few photos of them from my collection if you want.
I know what you mean, King's Quest, X-COM, I love all the stories and extra stuff those old games had with them. I have a lot of sierra catalogues from 1997-2001 I think, I love old |PC games. I have some more since this picture was taken, notably xcom terror from the deep and the first lords of the realm game.
I don't mind not having the manual, actually I have never read a manual in my life. But what still baffels me are the digital distribution prices, I can get the same freakking games phyiscally in shops for at least half price! WTF is going on?
A manual is cool because it completes the package. A manual is not there to be read for game rules but to add background story and character information. They're fantastic for reading while taking a dump for a start. I love looking through game manuals even though I hardly read them when it comes to control information.
I'm assuming you're referring to XBLA and PSN, because they are total horseshit. Steam is so much better it's not even funny. Console game manuals have always been total crap in this respect, though. At least PC games used to have giant, interesting manuals.
Not really. Many of my Mega Drive game manuals have great story sections. Same with some Saturn games. Sure, they aren't as wide as PC manuals but still a good read for ten minutes or so. Yesterday I actually said something to my wife that J thought I'd never say. I told her that after the next gen Im out of buying game consoles if they go digital download. She seemed very happy. To me, paying for digital download is no different than playing a ROM. Same with games with no manual. Its easy to copy a cover and disc art. Its like playing a copy in my mind. This may be because I'm 37 and have been gaming since the age of 6 so I'm stuck in my ways. I need a complete package to hold as look at. It just feels right. Heck, I won't even buy used games without a manual or box.
I'm totally out too with they go with stupid digital distribution. I believe some of them will explore the physical market, though. Some with said "collectors itens" and maybe some publisher will force the trend. But it must be a very brave publisher to do that. But for me I can play a game "only" if I read the Manual/whole package/anything included first. The last thing I check when I buy a game is the game.
Ah nice! I see we share quite a lot of games actually! And I see you have Dark Omen which is definitely one of my favorite non-RTS strategy games. Fantastic game. Are you also a Bullfrog fan or just Syndicate stuff? I love Bullfrog, wish they were still around!
I remember the day that i ve picked up my gears 3 copy, got just hours before the release, i was disappointed because it didn´t have a manual, only some stickers and a pamphlet I did even remember a launch video when a reporter asked for the first dude on the line "how is being the first guy to buy gears 3 on brazil?", poor dude wouldn´t even know it was me. I bet that on the next gen games will come in a paper cd case
Not including a manual due to "environmental concerns" seems like an excuse if you ask me. What? Back in the day, did people read their manuals once, then throw it into landfill? NO! You kept them for later reference! Or if their excuse isn't landfill-related, and they don't like that trees need to be cut down to make them... Well, there's a little thing called "plantations" that means we don't need to cut down native trees Plus, novels are are FAR bigger offenders for paper use than a little game manual.
You haven't played those serious simulation games, obviously. Some have controls like vi text editor meets space shuttle cockpit - literally hundreds of keyboard shortcuts. Yeah, makes that digital distribution absolutely worthless.
Sega xbox 360 games has manuals why not cheap m$ LOL. Once console games are digital downloads i mean with out physical media i am not buying any new consoles or games. And just play retro even Nintendo Wii u has manuals. I am unsure about new ps3 games half not got any new ones in a while.
