Sega to launch new handheld device According to Yuji Naka, who unveiled the machine to shocked games industry representatives at a Sega E3 press briefing, one day before the big E3 event, with their new creation (code-named 'Prometheus') Sega is not attempting to directly compete with Sony or Nintendo. The 'Prometheus' is instead being billed by Sega as "the videogame equivalent of the iPod". With the machine's pearl-white color scheme it is obvious to see that the company would seem to be invoking a similar design like Steve Jobs' ultra-popular music-playing machine. The similarities do not end there. Rather than purchasing games from their local EB or GameStop, gamers will download 'Prometheus' titles called "gamebits"from a special Sega online service. Sega says it will operate in a similar way to Apple's iTunes software. With the use of a supplied USB cable (also white) users may then transfer up to twenty "gamebits" on to their 'Prometheus' system's 15GB hard drive for play any time, any place. The 'Prometheus' is roughly the same width as a CD case, and half the height. It will operate on a rechargeable battery (possibly a lithium) which Sega say will last up to twenty hours. In a surprising move, in order to conserve battery power, the 'Prometheus' screen will not be backlit. Nevertheless, according to Sega, with power, that of the Dreamcast, plus a little extra, and a genuinely innovative and cost-effective approach to game distribution, the 'Prometheus' certainly shows promise. If the jubilant cheers and applause from the assembled journolists are anything to go by, Sega's return to hardware is more than welcome. Expect more tomorrow at the official Sega press conference where we hope to see at least footage of several potential launch titles. --------------------- OMFG YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
Umm....Link please? I find it doubtfull as the major gaming sites havent reported it and their is also this piece of news. http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/05/11/news_6097490.html
http://pc.ign.com/articles/512/512998p1.html I swear to god, blood will spill if this is their 'big announcment'. :smt027 :smt076
i hope for GLS's sake its not that! He might actually go crazy and :snipe: the place up if it is... :smt043 Mind you i might too! :smt027
If sega announces that, then its official that Sega sucks and that we should boycott them from here on out.
I have to agree that if Sega mention that then they are shooting themselves in the foot. That will flop like hell. I belive it to be bull though. Yuji Naka was seen on the Nintendo DS confrence talking about the DS. If he was to be promoting the company he works for, do you think he's be appearing on Nintendo's DS confrence videos? Yakumo
See sega could be smart bring killer games on the DS, PSP then go only to develop for their handheld and then people would want their great games... Hence buy their console! Or maybe not :smt017 Either way sega better make whatever they are gonna go on about good... cos ive been dissapointed so far!
damn, well this is probably a load of bullshit anyway, but regardless, I'm not a fan of downloadable games! As a collector I want something I can lovingly caress :smt043 (especially when its a Sega game)
As Paulo mentioned, I'm getting the resources together to go pull some hits on important people down there if this announcement is something stupid. I'm thinking of whacking Miyamoto, Naka, and any creepy Pikachu mascot people I see - anyone else have any requests? The hard part is finding a quick supplier of automatic weapons - I really don't want to have to resort to attempting to kill multiple people with a sharpened Vectorman cartridge.... [DISCLAIMER: In case you're a really humorless, paranoid cyborg with any affiliation to law enforcement, Sega, Nintendo, FBI, CIA, KGB, MI6, or the Vatican, I am not threatening or condoning or even seriously contemplating violence to any of the above named parties. Besides, I'm too broke to afford a bus ticket.] And on a serious note to somewhat validate the existance of this post, downloadable games are really not a good idea, especially if they are transferred from your PC to the device - getting the games ripped is usually half the battle in piracy, and by allowing the user to store files first on their computer, it's like giving the pirates a free corner kick.
Looks like this is Sega's big announcment, a new Phantay Star title: http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/05/12/news_6097766.html
Haven't you heard??? Sega's big announcement was the announcement that Phantasy Star Universe is in development by Sega's Sonic Team and will be online across all three major platforms(GC,PS2,Xbox). That's pretty big for a third party considering the series has not been a resounding success over the last couple of years. On the old hardware front,Sega fans still have alot of great stuff on the arcade to look forward too, including the new range stuff next year.Personally that would be enough for me,it is in FACT!!Just play F zero ax and that proves my point, that no one can cut it in the cades like Sega can. :smt023 I hope we see some more collobaration between Nintendo and Sega in the arcades and home front. It was amzing to see the Nintendo brand name back in the arcades, especially on a Sega Cabinet!!!Plus the quality of the title was so so pure,I find out new stuff every time I play it and if you can get somewhere where has the jap cabinet, the sharing system between GX and Ax is amazing.I'm still getting new stuff to this day.I love competing in the internet comps for the game too.Toshihiro Nagoshi should be commended for his overall contributions and commitments to online comps, connectivity, and online gaming now with the imminent Spikout Battle street on the Xbox.Word has it that this may come to the arcade on a Chihiro board as well and players willl be online at the arcade as well playing with and against home xboxer's.That would be truly amazing, and wholly possible with Ax and Gx had Ninty not dropped the Lan settings at the last minute.
Re: Haven't you heard??? Sega kind of wow-ed everyone with VF.net -- Virtua Fighter's semi-online arcade features. Totally sucked people in (including me) and made it basically the hottest game in the arcades for months. Another one of those could do their pocket books well.
