Hi yes I am new here, but I am a big saturn collector and got a few saturns with various extras like nights pad etc. Well I was looking through my saturn stuff the other day and I totally forgot that from a local charity shop a few years ago I pick up a saturn with 2 controllers and 3 games for £10 in good condition.
May not seem like nothing special, but on the saturn is a label as below (sorry about the quality, phone pics)

This does looked like it was owned by acclaim at some point, but I cant find out any information about saturns. I dont remember it being able to play "unofficial discs" as I tried, but also the controllers dont have the regular connectors either.

The controllers have got 9 pin D connectors which has the end on a short lead which plugs into the saturn, so basicly a saturn to 9 pin connector.

I was just trying to get some information and a little history as I assume it was registered to acclaim due to the serial number. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I've never see the controllers that you mentioned. So the Saturn has normal controller ports which use an andaptor to connect the modded 9 pin control pads?

Hey, yes I am pretty sure, unless the console itself has the 9 pin connector, cant check till tomorrow but definately the controllers have got a 9 pin connector on the end, and I am 90% sure it is like an adaptor lead to the console. that is what I find very strange about this saturn with the sticker on it.

Sounds like testing hardware to me. Makes creating new controllers or testing interfaces pretty easy to do.

Aside from that adapter and sticker it looks like a bog standard Model 1.

I have one similar to yours in my collection as well. Mine looks to be from a company called Sculptured. I picked up mine about 2 years ago and did a little research on the company. Looks like they did mostly ports from wrestling games etc, so nothing special... but I think these Saturn's still have some cool history to them. I also tried testing unofficial discs, as well as imports, (mine is U.S.) and they did not work. They must have just been for finial testing. Until this post, Ive never seen any other testing Sega Saturns! Thanks!

The may have been used to play CD-Rs but they would have required the System Disc to do so. Sega used System Discs to unlock security rather than Sony's approach of PS1 consoles that had no security lock.

The serial/9-pin adapters might open up a world of possibility. Considering the size and layout of that 9-pin controller adapter, do you think you could get away with plugging it into a Megadrive (or better yet, an Atari 2600)? You should try to reverse the idea as well and try a 6-button MD pad on the Saturn.

It kinda looks like that pad and it's converter were designed before the hardware was completely finalized. At the time, it would only make sense that they'd build off of legacy hardware.

EDIT: I wonder if these might have also been more cross-compatible on the PC end, although with serial the idea of "compatibility" is a bit downplayed these days.
