The best "helpful" glitch I know of is in sonic the hedgehog 2. for it to happen you had to enable the debug mode, and then kill yourself after finishing a level (while the score is being shown) while having only one life remaining.

the "game over" text would appear but then the game would switch levels (Emerald hills part 2, for exemple) and sonic/tails/whatever would still be alive...

    ...with 0 lives.

What this means is that as soon as you get killed while having 0 lives, you'll end up having 255 lives (255 or 256, not sure). then, if you really want to keep those lives, you'd have to get yourself killed a few times to make sure you don't get more than 255 lives because if you did, even if it's just one more life, the counter will roll back to 1, 2, 3 lives and so on.

is there any other bugs like this?

aren't helpful bugs in games called exploits?

The first one that comes to mind is one I found the other week in Team Fortress 2. As an engineer, you normally need to be right next to your dispenser to receive ammo/metal/heals. Also, you can not receive heals through a wall. BUT you can receive ammo and metal through a wall. At first glance this is kind of useless, and you're right, but it has one very very good application.

    On Dustbowl, level 3 (picture):

if you build your gun where the X is, and build your dispenser in the room pointed to by the arrow, up against the wall that divides the X area from the Arrow area, you set yourself up for a quick getaway.

You can receive metal through the wall to build and maintain your gun. Once the blue team pushes forward and kills your gun, or you are forced to retreat, you can go into the red arrow room and begin building immediately. Your dispenser wont die because bullets don't go through walls. Not only do you save the dispenser rebuilding time, but more than likely, the dispenser will be completely full of metal, so you can get your gun up to lvl 3 in like 20 seconds!

long story short: theres a bug where you can get dispenser ammo/metal through the wall

Well, when I was working as a video games bug tester (I used to work for bug tracker testing labs), my manager told me a story of how he got to test call of duty 4 and there were some bugs which haven't been corrected in the retail version, most of which were areas in the map where you'd simply fall under the game world, and he told me he used to be in the top 5 COD4 players because he found back those places and used that exploit to kill people without getting shot back at.

He fell off from the list because he felt bored and started playing other games.

    whats your managers name?

Anyway - infinte bottle glitch in Zelda 64. Very useful since you have the reciept for your biggoron sword and it just takes an inventory spot the rest of the game. Infinte bottle glitch andthat spot is now a helpful bottle

The W-item unlimited item glitch in Final Fantasy VII.

A pain in the ass wandering all the way to the end of the railway tunnel to get it but worth it in the long run.

Gears of War multiplayer had some "helpful" glitches. Forinstance being able to run in any direction (running speed) while shooting which is not normally possible. Another allows you to pickup a special weapon off the ground without stopping and doing the pickup animation where you are vulnerable. And perhaps the best is one which enabled you to actually jump up into the air, allowing you to get to tons of places you were not intended to be able to get to.

Missingno = Infinite Rare candys and Master Balls in Pokemon

EDF 2017 had a ton of exploits, too, kinda sorta. Like infinite armor farming simply by aiming a flamethrower above where ants drop for hours on end, etc.

In Oblivion, you literally CANT be hit if you can jump to a high place, like a crate. Seriously. It depends on what the enemies main attack is, but no NPC in the game knows how to jump except you. Oh, and Magicka weakness stacking, really exploitable. You can make a sword that can kill enemies in two hits by abusing this.

TF2 has a lot of things people consider exploits, I think Dispenser hopping is still popular, even on the PC version. Most of the really bad exploits have been patched eons ago for it.

Occasionally I'll get a glitch in Hydro Thunder for DC where my turbo stays at full. This makes races incredibly easy to win. =P Problem is I'm not sure what causes it.

Fortress of Narzod for the vectrex, let the Mystic Hurler kill you at the same time as you kill him and you'll then have 255 lives, although the machine will show infinity (an 8 on its side). Not sure if this is a bug or a feature, but it was damn hard to replicate after my brother found it all those years ago.

I think thats one of the exploits that I've actually used a lot, that was so awesome.

Those Gears multiplayer exploits were ridiculous, mostly annoying but they could be pretty hilarious too. "Someones out of the map guys, hold on a second..." guy flies out of the level and kills him, lol.

Mass Effect had a really good money exploit. If you completed a certain mission this lady would give you a discount on items she sold and would give you more money, than other merchants, for the items you sold. so basically you just do a lot of buying and selling between these two merchants and the more items you had in your inventory the faster your money would increase. so before i even started getting into the game, i had over 2 million credits and all the best armor and weapons.

i don't know if this was intentional or not but Lost Odyssey had a REALLY helpful exploit. save points throughout the game did not restore your HP or MP. however, if you saved, backed out to the main menu, reloaded, all the characters would be restored to full strength. this helped me out a ton and kept from spend tons of cash on potions and what not.

Madden '09 had an awesome glitch where you could hike directly to the wide receiver. break one tackle and you had a touchdown every time.

In Sega GT 2002, when buying upgrades for your car if you had the exact amount of money as the cost of the upgrade, say and upgrade costs $20,000 and you had exactly $20,000, when you bought the upgrade it wouldn't register that you had spent any money, so basically you got the upgrade for free. I abused the heck out of that exploit when I played through that game.

My sister loves to play the Zoo Tycoon games and all the millions of pointless add-ons, bless her.
She found that she could buy some sort of visitor entrance gate for $50 and sell it second hand for $200.
She has a very limited game horizon, poor girl.

There is the (almost) invincible Admiral in GTA: Vice City, always a good laugh for ramming the opposition into dust in the race missions. Just beware the flip!

That's always funny, though sometimes it's the other way and the person jumps out after them and immediately dies which is funny too.

Oh yeah, Left 4 dead had a lot of exploits, but I think they are fixed now.

Theres a rock you can jump onto in the Harbor level, where no zombies except specials can attack you. Still though, a Smoker pulling you down into the water or whatever can pretty much spell doom for your character.

Missingno is easily the greatest glitch of all time.

I guess stuff like wavedashing and l cancelling in Super Smash Bros Melee could be considered glitches as well, but they're more of an engine exploit than anything.
