Were there any good games for it besides rayman? (tempest maybe but I am not a minter fan and I think he just butchered the game) It's weird some people LOVE the system others are just MEH about it. I played some games for it and I don't really see why the system has it's fans. By all acounts it should've done well but the controller wasn't genre friendly (only worked for a few genres not all of them) the CD Drive was too little too late and by then Atari just didn't have anything left. Thoughts? and what do you think could've saved the system?
I actually think its pretty decent.. Tempest 2000, Super Burnout, Iron Solider, are all really good games... I'm not sure that there was much Atari could do other then make the system easier to develope for... it also didn't help them that they were really pushing the 64-Bits angle in their advertising.. yet their games were barely up to SNES quality in visuals...
I don't think that there was anything they could have done to save the system, besides a significant price drop and a huge library of amazing games. It was just the wrong price at the wrong time for something that really wasn't that amazing. It had some decent games on it but nothing really gave it that wow factor.
I bought a used one a few years back for a low price and I honestly felt it was nothing special. Yeah, Tempest 2k was good for a few weeks, but other games like Raiden, Iron Soldier and Power Drive Rally just felt like amateur European games with slightly enhanced graphics. Didn't really care for the controller either. Felt nice in your hands, but it had some pretty mushy buttons and the keypad was awkwardly placed.
I had one when it was actually relevant. I was also one of the very few people who was keeping a close eye on 4Play and Battle Sphere, and managed to buy one of the (stupid expensive even then, but not as bad as now) carts from their website. Anyways, I always liked the Jaguar. Alien vs. Predator, of course, is the first thing anyone should mention since it was AMAZING at the time and, in so far as atmosphere, is yet to be surpassed by any other game with that title. It hasn't aged that well, but its still an amazing concept executed incredibly well. I also got a lot of enjoyment out of Tempest 2000, Defender 2000, Iron Soldier, Iron Soldier II (Jaguar CD), some puzzle game called Flip! or something, Zool 2, I-War, Hover Tank, and, of course, the almighty Attack of the Mutant Penguins. God I love Attack of the Mutant Penguins, game is just awesome. In fact, I even found some enjoyment in Kasumi Ninja AND Ultra Vortek, even though neither was very well made. Amusingly enough, the Atari Jaguar is my DAD'S favorite system of all time, and he can't figure out for the life of him why it didn't do better than it did. Edit: Oh, and yes, Battlesphere is amazing as well. Though since you will never find 15 people with Jaguars, the link cable, and a copy of the game, its main selling point becomes somewhat moot.
Puzzle game I used to play on my Jag called Evolution: Dino Dudes Played the hell out of it, bit like I'm playing the hell out of PixelJunk Monsters now. A bit like Lemmings. I think you can get it for the SNES so I'll have to hunt that one down.
Nope. It was some weird 3D type game where you flipped tiles around a board. Here you go: http://www.gamespot.com/jaguar/action/flipout/index.html?tag=stats;img Seems most people didn't like it though. Ah well.
Yeah, Wolfenstein 3D and Doom were both pretty good on there. So was that Raiden port (though I don't like classic Raiden, Raiden Fighters is where its at!)
I had a game like that on the amiga. I think it was called Human or Humans. Is it the same game? I remember it was very hard.
Same game, yup. Think a sequel was made too. Great wee game. You discover the wheel then fire, stuff like that. Puzzle + Platforms. Nice.
Personally I thought the Jag was a load of crap. Like already mentioned I felt many of the games were just cheap wanna-bes. Yeah, the system had some great games but most of them were European computer ports from the likes of the Amiga. Raiden was a good conversion but as a shooter it was out-dated by the time it hit the Jag. As for the 3D stuff, well it all sucked major ass in my opinion when you compared it to the PlayStation and even the Saturn. Even the Mega Drive version of Virtual Racing moved, played and looked better than Jaguar's Checked Flag  Same goes for the 32X version of Virtua Fighter VS either of the two 3D Jag fighters. Yakumo
A system that should never have been made by a company that should have long before given up on hardware.
