    Hey

My router is going out on me. I finally had to bypass it just to stay online right now. Any tips for a new one? I was using a Linksys 54G. I'd rather not buy Linksys again, especially since my buddy just bought a new one and had to return it.

Here's what I connect to it:

    XBOX 360 (wired)
    Dell Desktop (wired)
    Dell Desktop 2 (wireless)
    HP Notebook PC (wired)
    HP Notebook PC (wireless)

I like gaming and I download a lot. So I want something that can sort through everything. I also want password protection for my wireless.

I'm using JCOM which id 30 Mbps/2 Mbps. I'll switch to the 100 Mbps service when it's available in the next year or so. All of my wireless adapters are set up for b/g.

Is there any benefit to upgrading to the "a" wireless?

well linksys is almost the best home router you can grab, i recommend you to avoid D-Link routers, they like to not function well with port redirections ...
I would buy another linksys even having problems with one time ago.

    d-link is rubbish
linksyst , the wrt 54g? can be hacked to become a linux box,
and switch to those Japanese channels not allowed here in the usa.

Get yourself some buffalo or netgear.

Beware though, only old versions of that Linksys Router can be modified to a decent degree. For you, the N Draft version routers would be best as they allow higher bandwidth over wireless.

Eric, you need to get the latest or at least a year old version of Buffalo’s Air Station ! I use one and can say that they are piss easy to set up plus come with Blue Tooth and AOS which stuff like the PSP, Wii or DS use. All you do is press the AOS button then set your console to search for the signal. Once found they are then connected to the net via the Air Station. So simple. Of course you can password everything so no bugger in the area can use your Air Station to gain free net access. I bought mine last December but I saw that they have a new model out now (Probably the same thing in a new case). As far as I remember it cost about 20'000 yen.

Yak, since I'll want to modify it a bit with port forwarding and other tweaks....does that unit come with an English interface?

Unfortunately not. It's pure Japanese however there maybe an English patch for the software. It might be worth checking out the official site.

[plug]I like the FON Wireless Router - www.fon.com[/plug]

Except it's probably not what you want, as it requires you to get a seperate wired router too. It does, however, let you have free internet anywhere else with a FON router (or alternatively, allows you to make money by sharing your internet for cash) and they are relatively cheap.
