Remember my 1984 Toyota 4x4? Engine had problems so I tore into it today. Here's the results so far. Time for a rebuild. Truck is from California and the engine is a 22R. Gonna get a 0.040 over master rebuild kit for it. Kit will include all new bearings, rings, gaskets, and pistons. I'll keep you posted on my progress. EDIT: 2000 posts now. Yay?
Not really. The cylinder walls are scored up pretty good and my grandfather, who has built hundreds of engines, didn't think it will clean up at 0.02 over so I'll go straight to the 0.04 kit.
While shit is out of the way, are you going to replace all the water hoses? New water pump etc? Been a while since i rebuilt an engine (rb20det), my favourite was when a mate and i rebuilt his 12a ported turbo in his rx3. That was a beast!
If you're going to rebuild the block and change pistons, rods, bearings, rings and so shouldn't you also go for a head machining? With new valves, springs, valve heads and what not. As well as new radiator hoses, new water pump, maybe a new radiator... It's my opinion but if you're going to spend a lot of money rebuliding the engine you maybe should rebuild all of it. At least the most important stuff.
So I've been talking to my grandfather and we have come to a conclusion. the Toyota is going to get sold for parts and I'll be buying a '76 chevrolet C20 he has on the ranch. Gonna have to be sure it works before the deal is set in stone. The thinking is that we only have one truck right now for hauling our gooseneck trailers and if it breaks down we're screwed. By me having the '76 running as my truck it will also work as a backup gooseneck hauler should the '86 C20 break down. More details once I get things in motion. Long term plans for the '76 include a Cummins diesel swap. There are kits now that allow the engine to be a direct bolt in for this model of Chevy frame.
