Anything I should know, like suggestions who to ask that may have or could find one cheaply? Or problems making it run here I've overlooked? This is thrift shop type material for much of the world I'd assume. Except it wasn't released in North America... Likewise my chances of finding any Megadrive (rather than Genesis) here in the states is already slim, but an early model without a feature more or less only verifiable through boot up? Not happening anytime soon.
If you buy one online just ask the person to check for you, if you buy it in person ask if you can check it. That is all you can really do, common sense if you ask me -_-
I think TMSS free consoles have ''HIGH DEFINITION GRAPHICS'' written on the console. Not all HDG consoles are TMSS free though.
Look for Australian sellers - trust me, these consoles are everywhere in aus and a lot are on sale on eBay. EDIT: I own one of these consoles you mention and i'm in aus.
I have three non TMSS consoles. They're Tec Toy (since I'm in Brazil) and their motherboard is USA VA3 (SEGA Genesis motherboard) but Tec Toy MD1 consoles aways come on EURO casing.
It does? I thought EURO casing is the only way to get that white around the power LED, rather than red.
Well... It's the EURO casing, but the ring is still the SEGA GENESIS ring so no, it's red sadly. http://fuynfactory.is-a-geek.com/wiki/index.php/Tectoy_Sega_Mega_Drive_II Mega Drive II is just how Tec Toy named the TMSS model here. The earlier model looks exactly the same but has no II in it. My unit in particular has been modified to look like a PAL unit (white ring), reset button was swapped for the blue one also it defaults to DOMESTIC mode because most software I use in it is Japanese and finally I changed the boring RED led for a less visually aggressive green led.
Yeah, hmm. I always miss some kind of obvious detail or caveat when planning out these sorts of ideas. That linked Mega Drive II looks so much like a Genesis I wonder if maybe it'd defeat the purpose for what I'm after.
THAT'S RIGHT! I TOTALLY FORGOT. IIRC if the console is VA0-3 it is no TMSS (when it's a MD1) VA4 and VA5 on MD1's were rarer consoles anyway so if you can get a mobo shot and see the VA number that's the most clear indicator of the age of the console. Don't hold me to that but if VA3 doesn't have it then that and anything under should be fine
Yeah it still beats trying to get the case and motherboard separate. Between PAL or JPN, I'm leaning PAL. even everdrive cannot software hack the system into 50hz mode. unlike patching roms to run in Japanese if for some reason I wanted.
Well I wouldn't know about Euro. That is not true for the Genesis, making even finding one of those without TMSS through luck near impossible. Let alone a MD.
