Do something nice for someone who knows nothing about the subject matter, all of the sudden they are a google genius who know more than someone with years in the field. Sure, go fuck up you systems using google search results instead of the qualified and vetted professional. Seems people only respect someone if they get a hefty bill in return. Never do favors for free.
Yeah some people are like that. This reminds me of when my friend wanted to mod his PSP and he told me he was going to open it up and start messing with the board (he has no soldering kills btw). I told him he could just softmod it but he didn't believe me. Sometimes people can be stupid.
There was a user that got on Mark of classic game room goes by the name of silent Rob. I couldn't believe how many hate comments he and the users left, mark never makes negative comments about others and just lives his life making good bussiness decisions. Mark is a genuinely good person, that at times bonks his employees with a portable.
To be fair that happens to every skilled personal nowadays. Doctors are challenged by patient that "went on webMD and clearly got a lupus", people ask you to recover files on a sd-card dissolved in acid/burnt/from a photo because they saw it done on TV, they ask for complex photoshopping and are suprised/offended that it costs money, etc. The internet made so much information available to everyone so easily, and the good information is hard to come by. I experience it myself, as a scientist, when people ask me stuff and then, after a tedious argument, offer to "agree to disagree" with me over basic stuff (e.g. you're can't create energy out of thin air). They think I'm simply covering up for the Greats and Riches of this world. I sure hope I'd be, my pay-check would be far more interesting...
I could be wrong, I don't know. I think most people likes to look smarter when they are, I mean, no one likes the genius cause when they open their mouths you might get a thought about yourself "How stupid I am" or somethink like that. Almost all people using(used) this type of logic and only few of them will be glad to get advice from someone or be really exited by somene's great work. I think the knowledge is the primary cause that determines if a someone will be greatfull for talking with you as a more knowledgeable person or he will be google-style grammar-nazi cause he knows only how push the buttons on the keyboard. I think there are two factors (to make it short): -No one likes to look more stupid than another -The knowledge: the more you know - the more you understand others and respect their words, work, time ### I am a pretty knowledgeless man - I don't know any kind of languages (hardware or software based) I have a good soldering skills and a lot of interest to the consoles. If there were't any proffesional on my way that greatly helps me I would never be at my point now (and even that amount of knowledge is no enought). All I wanted to say - not to stop sharing with some dumbass people like me a knowledge.
My friend recently got a PS3 from his sister (CECHG, had YLOD). They asked how they should go about fixing it, and I explained that your options are a reflow/reball, which costs money, or you can use the oven method which can really do some damage if you're not careful. They then asked about modding it and changing the housing to be in a normal PC tower (why? why would you need this?) and how to use it as a computer. I told them there wouldn't be any free way of downgrading to mod it, and they insisted I was just wrong. Questions just kept coming that are found in seconds by just googling a query. I even told them to look it up because ALL the answers were on many many sites from a lot of people experienced in the whole process. In the end, despite my warning they do the oven method anyway, and then in person ask me why it costs money to mod it. At that point I just checked out and stopped caring. Drove him to a donut place with his friend and just shut him up with a donut.
I didn't even want to bother explaining what the requirements were to mod it outside of tools. I just don't understand why he thinks I can do things for free. In the end he'll learn.
When I used to be in IT and people would ask me to do stuff for them (and clearly for free), my answered used to be sure no problem - long as you come round and clean my house (or insert other job). Seemed to drive home the point my time isnt free.
This is normal life, the internet makes it pretty bad since you'll get a whole group of "experts" on you at once. Yet I would say my worse experience was at a startup where the CEO was this way. "Hey I saw someone do this in a youtube video, that means you can do the same and I want to see a demo by 4pm (it's 2pm)". =|
Its about how you hold yourself and how you show the value of what your doing. If you act like "piece of cake" then they'll assume it's a piece of cake in general (not just because you know what you're doing).
Yup, I know how this feels completely. I feel I Know my shit. I may not know 100% of it. But I never act superior than my friends and cohorts in the community at large. I am open to learn everyday from anyone I can. Pisses me off when peeps are just out for number one and are willing to blue falcon the next person in line to get what they want. Sad really. Pathetic mostly. Fucking angering for sure. Sorry you had to deal with whatever it was you got bent over on Kev.
Well, even if I also had bad experiences with some stupid people, I still do favor for "free", as I always believe people will do the same for me or someone else. The less I use money, the better I feel. Few days ago, I met an English worker in the train who wasn't able to buy a ticket as his card wasn't working in our French money terminals, so I offered him a ticket. The guy was so surprised and told me that he will not be able to help me back. I just told him to do one favor for someone else, if help is needed. I do believe that he will do it, even if I sometimes think that I am too nice. Anyway, I will educate my kids this way. If they have bad feedback when helping people, they will not have to blame themself., just blame the poor guy who dumped them. I am a bit off topic haha.... Anyway, our world is full of 13 yo dude older than their grand parents. And this place has some of them. Asking for help on whatever, but never giving back help if needed. Fortunately, there is also very good people on this board ! This week end, I have opened my NPDP Reader to connect the drive to a retail gamecube, in order to read some of my Prototypes, thanks for the help of some guys on here. So I will be glad to help them back
maybe you havent helped that many people in the past but if you have im amazed its taken you this long to realise this, people are ungrateful, end of
One time, I came back to my hometown after being gone for a few years. A sports fanatic couple at my old job were about to go on a long vacation so they gave me half a season in free minor league baseball tickets. It was nice of them. I had no time to use them, so I figured... "hey, someone could really use these!" and popped into a busy convenience store for a cup of coffee. Tickets in hand, I broadly say something like "hey folks! free baseball tickets on the counter! whoever wants em - first come first serve". Plenty of blank stares. A few scowls. No response. All but 45 seconds later, I walk back up to the counter with my cup of coffee and the tickets were already gone. A warm summer day in a cold cold world. No place like home, right?
As long as they help you as well in another situation or something. Even if it's family, I stopped helping some douchebags.
