Alot of us do this on a regular basis. But doesn't it remove some of the feeling from old holding your Xbox controller? I'd like to use my old NES controller, but how? Is it possible to buy a USB-to-Xbox adapter, such as this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Xbox-X-Box-KEYBOARD-MOUSE-USB-Cable-Linux-Mod_W0QQitemZ290258815182QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item290258815182&_trkparms=72%3A635|39%3A1|66%3A4|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 and use it together with a NES-to-USB adapter, such as this one: http://retrousb.com/index.php?productID=116 ? If not, could I achieve this in any other way, perhaps by stripping the cable?
Sounds reasonable possible. What you are saying. So go on, but it and do the other stuff. And then I believe you are happening. But I could be wrong.
Retrousb's adapter encodes the pad into a USB HID gamepad, and the Xbox adapter *probably* just adapts the connector (since Xbox pads are also USB HID), but since Xbox's HID is fixed and will never change, I don't think it'll work unless the emulator can interpret ALL HID gamepads in addition to Xbox's specific HID, which is unlikely.
Im not saying this will work, hell it probably wont, but do you think possibly cutting the cable off the xbox conroller and then resoldering the wires to an NES controller would work??? I.E. find out what buttons on the xbox controller go through which wires, and then solder the wires for the buttons you need to the NES controller. Just an idea i had, hope it helps, sorry if im way off:icon_bigg
It wont work, you would need special drivers for the xbox which don't exist. Maybe if a nes emu had drivers built in it might work but I don't know if its ever been done. If you really want to have it work than take a read here. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=510168
Skavenger: it's been many a year since wires were dedicated to individual buttons on controllers. Happened back in the Atari days, up to the Megadrive 3-button pad as I recall, but certainly not with the 360. A similar approach to what you're suggesting is to wire up the button contacts on the main pad PCB to the receiving pad, but that's a pain. Lawrence who runs NFG Games performed a similar mod on a 360 controller and it worked out fine, but I'd always be worried about the durability of such a solution. Not sure about the wisdom of playing NES on Xbox in the first place, anyway.
Personally I still like playing my nes games on my nes. Nothing else feels quite right, even if I had an emulator with a real controller.
Thank you for contributing to this thread. Now, does a retro style controller exist for the Xbox (1)? Like the retro controller for the Wii.
I'd like to point out that the stock Xbox pad has analogue buttons that detect how hard you hit them. Wiring external buttons directly to these contacts won't give you predictable results. If you're confident enough to go modifying an existing, donor controller for your theoretical NES controller, I would go for one of the big arcade-styled joysticks that were released for fighting games. Those most likely have the analogue button functions boiled out of them already and would be better suited for direct wiring, or better still for an external Neo Geo-type of port for secondary input.
Yeah, I was drunk of anger what I ment was, you could buy those two things and then maybe put them together
