I enjoy lots of customization and abilities that really let me play the game how I want to play it and make the character my own. I also enjoy fun, challenging, and memorable boss battles.
 I thought the exact same thing the first time I played it. Can't say I'm a huge fan of Spoony, but I agreed with a lot of his review. I gave the game a fair chance, really. It had a fun battle system, but once I made it to the infamous back rub scene, I just couldn't continue. It was horrendous, especially if someone else is in the room while you play it. The main cast of X are actually pretty good voice actors, though X wasn't exactly their best performance. One of the problems in X, along with many other English dubbed JRPGs, is that they don't adjust the timing of the dialog. So if a sentence is short in Japanese, they have to make it short in English, or speed up the dialog so it fits. I recall a scene towards the end of XII where Basch is talking to Gabranth about how he could keep fighting despite all of his hardships (haven't heard that before ). The line was delivered like "I had someone more important to defend. AnddefendherIhave." The acting was great, but the actor was forced to awkwardly fit that last part in. Here's the scene (it starts at around :35): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGxG1e_wiOA Stuff like that happened a lot in X. Ironically, I hear even the Japanese dub wasn't all that great. I can't tell how good the acting is since I don't speak Japanese, but somehow Tidus manages to be even more annoying than he is in English. I didn't think that was possible.
Sometimes I've thought about using Action Replay or something to get through some interesting JRPGs with annoying random encounters. For example, I like the atmosphere of Digital Devil Saga, but there seems to be a random battle every couple of steps (it doesn't help that combat is hard like in most Megaten games).
