Another solid Activision title! EDIT: https://twitter.com/BalrogGameRoom/status/648912562311008256
I bet if this happened to Call of Duty Black Ops 3 they've would of slide it off and gave it a free pass
New rule, if the game gets a patch bigger than the retail disc. I shall not buy and the game never came out
At first I was really excited about the announcement of THPS5 . But I can't even remember a single positive thing said about the game since the announcement. I'm guessing that the quality of the game will be much like that of The Amazing Spider Man 2. Another budget title from Activision. There hasn't been a good skating game since Skate 3. It doesn't look like this is going to be the ''next'' skating game.
I just reviewed THPS 3 on the N64 which doesn't look much worse. Plays a lot better too. I was honestly excited for this when it was announced. Yes there were red flags everywhere, but I was like "it can't be as bad as those stupid peripheral games, right?". Now I wonder if the Tony Hawk franchise is better off here or in the Phantom Zone with Crash Bandicoot. Probably should go double for games that not only get a review embargo, but give out press copies AFTER THE GAME LAUNCHED (per Kotaku, and a few other places mentioned the lack of review copies). Actually, you know what? Same goes for ALL media that gets a review embargo. I knew the Fantastic 4 movie would suck as soon as I heard it had one.
Ever since it was revealed, the game looked like crap and the actual gameplay was average at best. At $20 it would be already embarrasing. At $60, it's downright criminal. Tony Hawk should be ashamed of what Activision does with his name. But like the other previous game, he doesn't seem to care.
Of course Tony wouldn't care, he's probably played the game and thought the same as us. He's been paid for the name, so of course he wouldn't care.
Are you really surprised? This game is from the people who brought you Tony Hawk HD, which should've been great but turned out to be crap. And Tony doesn't give a shit, he's an old man getting paid for having his name on this game and doing nothing else for it.
The day one patch is ridiculous. I never intended to get this game until it releases on last gen consoles, anyway (there's absolutely no reason it shouldn't be able to run smoothly on 360). Hopefully, since those version are a month away, they won't need massive patches from the get-go (if they come out at all, that is). I have still been reading positive responses from long-time fans of the series. Apparently, it at least plays a lot better than THPS HD. That's good news, in my book. Obviously it looks bad... obviously the glitches are bad (although most are just buggy ragdoll physics)... and there's no doubt whatsoever that the full price is a ripoff. However, the park editor looks pretty great, and if it plays like a Tony Hawk game should, then I'll still be picking it up, personally.
I still can't believe the industry has come to shipping broken games, even with "Day 1 patches." On that same note, I'm surprised consumers stand for it. I really do miss when games shipped ready to play, lest the publisher enjoyed costly recalls. I'm not big on modern games, so maybe someone can help me out: How bloated has video game development become since the the Silver Age?
The ragdoll physics & collision look intentionally horrible. Just read more on that day one patch. Wow, that is really pushing it, & it should be the first giant warning sign to stay far away from this piece. Can't wait to see the next garbage release that pushes patching, always online & DLC nonsense to the next level.
I believe the day 1 patch adds in the actual game, as opposed to the disk only containing the course editor and tutorial. That's, to say the least, an incredibly idiotic failure of basic quality control there.
Unfortunately Grandfather Hawk probably doesn't have this on the forefront of his mind haha. That's also what I read. I think this was originally supposed to be either a mobile game or a budget, download-only title and Activision saw dollar signs. They didn't make enough from TH HD so they "whored" this project out.
The last real Tony Hawk game was Proving Ground. It's basically Neversoft's Crash Bandicoot. Anything that has come out since it stopped working on the series has damaged the IP (and has mostly been from Robomodo, makers of Tony Hawk: Ride).
