Sonic Team, simply for the rotation effect they pulled of in Sonic the hedgehog when it was said it couldn't be done.

who said, it couldn't be done? it's no mode7 or such stuff. it's a simple animated sqare-object rotation. an not even a smooth one.

    Carmack all the way.

When the man speaks, the industry listens.

I don't know much about the guys "Behind the scenes" of gaming, but I think the guys behind Spore (I dont know if Will Wright is a part of the programming staff or not) are really talented programmers and have really impressed me with what they could do with procedural generation.

Gabe Newell, bitches. Actually, I'm not sure of his exact role in game development, but he sure is a cool dude.

I'm not really a fan of Carmack's work, but is there any truth in the rumour he asked for a laptop to be sent for programming while on honeymoon? If so, this solidifies his "hardcore" credentials in my opinion. As for Gabe Newell, is he really a master coder or just the face of a quite talented group (again, this isn't really my field of expertise, so forgive me if I'm off the mark)? Half-Life brought Valve into the gaming world spotlight, though I was under the impression much of the basic engine stemmed from an updated/modified version of that used in Quake. Based on this, surely his team isn't worthy of the credit they get? I dunno... I couldn't care less anyway since my vote is still going to Keiji Okayasu!

Yeah the Gold Engine is a heavily modified version of the Quake2 engine I heard, and depending on who you ask its so modified that it could be considered an engine of its own.

Why does this remind me of the claim a few years back that Cassini was a hack of GiriGiri Saturn, which the former's programmer counter-claimed was more like a separate project with enough code rewritten to warrant being labelled a completely new emulator? Hm...
