Generation, perhaps? For instance: 1: Atari 2600, Channel F, Videopac/Odyssey 2: NES, SMS, GX4000 3: GB, GG, Lynx 4: SNES, MD, PCE 5: Jaguar, 3DO, MegaCD, 32X 6: Saturn, PSX, Pippin, PCFX, N64 Etc.
That'd work as long as you gave each generation a name most people would understand... but who's to say which is best? For certain, even though I'm an atari fan, the Jag etc. generation would score minus points (even if I didn;t realise at the time) kevin

Most era type categorizing gives 3 categories - vintage, sorta modern(i.e. SNES, MD), and modern... but you could probably divide that into 4 now.
