I have a PSP that I bought to play on international flights, and that's the only time I've played it. I haven't flown since January so it's just been sitting there.

Now that damn New Super Mario Bros. is out and it's poking at me. I have no idea why. I've never owned a Nintendo console unless I was reselling it.

The PSP is an amazing machine, but the games always look like they should be on a full screen rather than a portable. It just looks shrunk down and I'm really not interested in playing MSG, Winning 11, or any driving game like that. That's probably why I haven't bought anything except for Tiger Woods. I'm in Japan and the movies are $40 here which is insane to me.

The DS seems to have more games that were designed for a smaller system in mind. Not that I buy a lot of software, but there are more choices.

Has anyone owned both? Anything I'm missing here?

Get the DS. I owned both for a while, but sold the PSP because the DS was getting so much more playtime, and had more great games on the horizon than the PSP

I do not recommend trading it in. While there is currently nothing coming out, what if there is something in the future that you want to have? The DS is amazing, but cheap as well. If you can, save up and own both.

Well I haven't touched my PSP in 6 months and I've never bought another game for it beyond the original Tiger Woods that I bought. Money isn't the issue, waste is...heh.

It's that damn Super Mario Bros. Damn Damn Damn.

    Damn.

I would definitely get the DS. The PSP is a cool piece of hardware, but the games haven't been able to keep my attention. I didn't buy a DS initially because I thought they were too big and ugly, but I got a DS Lite with new super mario bros, phoenix wright, and mario kart ds when it first came out. Unfortunately, I never got to play it because my girlfriend was constantly playing new super mario bros, and she HATES video games. My solution: I bought another. It's kept me pretty good company on my frequent commutes to DC.

I have both and i say DS all the way. Sony just didn't put out enough games to really make the system stick. But they sure did put out enough firmware updates.

I have a DS and a GP2X. I want a PSP though...just only for the N64 emulation. Great job on that subbie!

Got a DS and some great games I have and are coming out, Mario is in the mail.

It is just such a different machine

PSP I don`t own and don`t want one as too expensive so few expensive games, even more expensive movies that I can watch on my phone, but why bother.

DS all the way.............and why you haven`t got one already Eric is an absolute travesty :)

I've had more fun with the ds in the short amount of time I've owned one(about 6 months or so), then I ever had with my ps2 or ps1. And I've definitely enjoyed it much more then the psp. I borrowed one for a month but only really used it for nes emulation, which isn't really much of a sytem seller when you've got a dreamcast and decent tv.

I can also say the DS is just as good for long stretches of gaming as it is for short bursts. Before I bought one I was afraid most games would be more tailored towards playing in 10 min sessions(since I always heard everyone say how much they loved it because it allowed them to play "on the bus", "on the john" ect..). But I can honestly say that hasn't been a problem at all.

Then again I've been waiting for a top-notch 2d sonic since sonic 2, so Sonic Rush alone would be enough to make the ds a must have for me. The game is very close to becoming my favorite sonic title of all time, the music is about the only thing I find lacking in comparison to sonic 2(though I can't get enough of the theme song.)

If you like standard platformers and don't mind mixing things up with the occasional weird stylus game you can't go wrong with the ds, and like others have mentioned they are pretty cheap. I would imagine the big ds is under 100 bucks now that the lite is out(it's 129 right?). You could probably pick up a used ds for around 60 one would think.

Alrighty, looks like I'm hearing what I assumed would be the good points about the DS. I want that Sonic game as well.

    I don't play PS2 either, not sure why I thought owning a PS2 with a tiny screen would be a good idea...heh.

    Thanks for your comments.

Definitely go with the DS. IMO its probably the best thing to happen in this "generation" of consoles. :)

With the PSP being one of the low points...

For international flies, get a laptop with a nice GPU and use it with new games. If you want old school then a budget laptop loaded with emus is more than enough.

Honestly I dont like portables anymore, and this generation was the last one I had any hope it would change things around.

PSP: great hardware, UMD beng the only drawback in that aspect. Catalog? ugh! is like sony sinked their own boat, and the PS3 seems to follow the same path.

DS: Some nice games, better ratio of great/trash than the PSP. But hardware, man it was obsolete from start. As subbie said, it just a souped-up GBA. I'm very dissapointed with what I saw of Starfox. I mean the thing had sub-N64 quality, that last one being 10 years old!.

As I said, in a plane use a laptop. If you want gaming anywhere, then get the DS. You could always consider the GPX2, but some say is just too el cheapo for todays standarts.
