Hey there everyone! I have had an N64 console all my life, and played loads of games on it. With the Everdrive 64 I can play new and old games, which is fantastic! However those games naturally don't contain my older save files. I was wondering, if there was a way to transfer those save files to the Everdrive 64, and back them up? I have the N64 Passport, which can backup Cart Eeproms to Game Pak. But is there a way to Backup those game pak saves to the Everdrive 64? Can I just transfer them with the passport Everdrive 64? Or will it corrupt it ? - Madsmaten
I don't think the ED and Passport will work together. The ED would need to first be "told" via its menu which cart to "become" (which rom - and save data - to load) before you could do anything meaningful with the PP. A retrode or copier unit would be easiest - maybe you can borrow one (or send your carts to someone who has one). Failing that, you could try a Dexdrive to read those mempacks to the PC, but then you'd need to figure out how to extract the eeprom backups from there. One you have those you should be able to just copy those files alongside the roms on the ED's sdcard.
Okay thank you! I have been checking those Dexdrives out, there are quite cheap. Unfortunately shipping to Denmark is insane I will keep looking! However, once I get home I will try to transfer my Gamepak saves via the Passport III. All the guides says that they used the Gameshark, so I will give it a try before ordering anything. Is there a common way to extract those Eeeproms? And as far as my understanding goes, the retrode only backups game cartridges, not the actual saves. But I might be wrong on that one?
I assumed that since the Retron 5 (which is basically a Retrode, a bunch of controller-to-USB converters and an Android machine in a single box) seems to be able to (though I hear writing them back is broken), the Retrode is too. But looking into it, it seems like it's not implemented... Apparently it only works woth SNES/SFC carts.
Yea okay, I happen to own all the systems it supports 160 bucks for a backup of my N64 collection saves is quite expensive. ( Don't get me wrong! I appreciate that you are helping me with this! ) I would love to try out one of those Dexdrives, even if it fails, cause they are so cheap. The only thing stopping me at the moment, is import taxes and charges in my country runs up to nearly a 100 dollars :/
You can easily dump cartridge saves with a Neoflash N64 Myth cart to an SD card. Maybe you find one of those used on ebay for a good price. Also since you mentioned that your N64 Passport can backup saves to Mempaks. You can read Mempaks with the Everdrive 64, if it's not directly implemented into the menu then you could use a homebrew app written with libdragon. Then once you got the Mempak backed up on your Everdrive 64 SD card you can plug the SD card into your PC and open the Mempak backup with a Hexeditor and figure out where the cartridge save is hiding. Lastly I am sure that you can somehow transfer savegames using a Gameshark. Here is a thread I found: http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?31850-Dumping-N64-Game-Saves-with-a-Gameshark-with-LPT-access So while the first option is easy the other two could also work if you spend enough time figuring them out.
Well, even if you got a DexDrive you'd still have to find out how to extract the EEPROM data from the saves the passport makes. Best case, it stores some meta info (which cart the backup belongs to, size, whatever) along with the plain data - but it's likely it'll have compression, which would need figuring out. Re: Gameshark - sounds like a decent way to do it, if you still have a printer port on your PC. And apparently there's also GS revisions where parallel port doesn't work, so that's another thing to look out for...
Okay, I managed to get my Goldeneye gamepak save, saved to my N64 Memory Pak, I then backed up my Pak, and got a .MPK file. I than opened the MPK file in project64 emulator with N-Rage plugin. I could acess the memory pak, and save the file as a note. Now I got a file called: "gege_1.a64". Not really sure what to do now, as RSO also said in this quote: I somehow need a way to extract those EEPROM saves out of that .a64 file right?
Do you mean you want to back up the controller pak saves (the game save paks that fit into the joypad)? If so, you can do this already using the Everdrive 64, as the ED64's operating system already has this built in, you don't need extra hardware, just the N64, Everdrive 64, and a controller pak to save or restore the data to/from. The data is stored on the SD card, which is in FAT32, so you can copy/move the saves to your PC for backup. The only problems are that so far you can only backup or restore an entire controller pak in one go (so you can't, say, just backup or restore one game save on a controller pak, you have to do the whole controller pak, with every game save on there, at once), and that so far you can't name the backup files via the N64 or Everdrive 64, though you can rename them from the PC when the SD card is plugged into the PC later on. Off topic: I take it you've seen the thread at http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=147.0 so you know which games need special (fixed) files to run, and you've also seen (the superb) Goldeneye X (http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=1312.msg13167)?
Hey there Conker2012! What I would love to do, is to transfer my saved game from a game like Goldeneye. The game is saved on the cartridge, with a 4k EEPROM, as far as my knowledge goes. I am able to transfer that EEPROM to my N64 Memory Pak, via the Passport III (or Gameshark for that matter). I can then back up my Memory Pak on the Everdrive 64, and copy the content over to PC. I have done all that already, I made a format of the memory pak every time I backed up a cartridge save. The thing I need now, is to somehow convert that memory pak (MPK) file to its original EEPROM again. Then I can put the EEP's onto the save folder of the E64 and use my original save files from when I was a kid, only this time on my RGB modded 60hz N64
Hello mate! Sorry, I misunderstood what you wanted. No idea (though I'm jealous that your N64 is RGB modded, not (easily) possible with my PAL system (). I can only suggest that you post your problem at the official ED64 forum, at: http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?board=4.0 as both the inventor of the N64, and some very clever N64 programmers, post on the forum, and so hopefully someone can help you. Good luck!
Thank you Conker! I just posted my question on Krikzz ( Link: http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=2441.0 ) Hope they can help me! I know exactly what you mean, I have been a PAL gamer all my life. Luckily the older consoles can be modded, with switches etc. I bought the N64 from Japan for 15 dollars, and then the modding kit I assembled myself with a couple of different parts. It's seriously worth the effort!
This. Don't forget to put down which cart each save belongs to so we know what game to check against.
Try those, remember to rename them accordingly to your rom names. I also attached some more generic save games.
OMG you sir, are a genius! Different class, Different class! Thank you so much! Allow me to ask how you did this? And also, is Mario Kart a different kind of save type, since it's not attached ? Yeeeeeahh! Thank you so much really! Thank you
Also got it done just now: https://www.dropbox.com/s/vaf6cu9ks6pkps6/saves.zip?dl=0 Tested in Mupen64Plus and SM has stars, MP coins, GE unlocked levels and MK shows the new title screen. Size might be off though - all of the carts supposedly use 4K, yet for some reason Mupen creates 2k saves if you start "fresh"? Not sure what's up with that. Blackbag's SRAM Manager has a hex view which I used to find the offset (1280 bytes btw), from there I copied 4K and done.
I wasn't sure if they will work since I neither own a N64 Passport nor an Everdrive 64. So I stopped after the third. What I did was: - download a hex editor: http://mh-nexus.de/en/downloads.php?product=HxD - download the ED64_SAVES.zip example save games - open your mpk file with the hex editor - open a corresponding save game from the ED64_SAVES.zip folder with the hex editor - search for the part of the mpk file that looks like the save game from the ED64_SAVES.zip - then just cut that part out and put it into a new file Just try it with Mario Party, it's super easy for that particular game because it says HUDSON where the save begins
Just tried myself, and got it working! This is amazing!!! Thank you guys so much! I think I will create a turtorial on how to do this, I will of course remember to mention you guys as well I'm so happy for this!
