    Hey Guys

I'd like to have someone send me a transfer from overseas to my Japan Post bank account. Has anyone ever done this before? I can easily get transfers into my other bank accounts in Japan, but I've never tried it using Japan Post. I ran across this page which talks about using an intermediary, but I wanted to know if anyone has ever tried it or not and what the result was.

    Thanks!

Technically your Yuuchou account should have a branch name and account number just like any other cocked up Japanese bank account. At that point, if it has a SWIFT account, international transfer should be a piece of piss. But, that's not always the case. I don't have one so SWIFT support is pure speculation.

My advice: Get a Shinsei or Citibank account (Shinsei is better). They both specialize in foreign currencies, don't charge you to receive international funds, don't automatically switch them to yen upon arrival, and have far more competitive FX rates. From there, switch it to yen when the rate is on your side, and transfer it into your Yuucho account for 500 yen or whatever it costs. Coming full circle, to do that, you'll need your Yuucho account to support the standard Japanese bank branch + account number system.

I've just set up a Citibank account for the reasons GP has stated above.

Japan Post is easier to set up in Japan (from what I can gather) but I'll be trying my luck with MUFJ.

Get a Shinsei account. They have very few branches, but you can use 7-11 ATMs for free (24 hours). Their website is 1000x better than Citibanks. Citibanks is proof that Citibank is run by Japanese (and Shinsei's is proof that it's run by westerners).

MUFG... I only got an account b/c I needed an account w/ a Tsuuchou (bank book) to start my business. It is a "typical, useless Japanese bank" ...except if you just need to store cash and get it out of an ATM at whatever hours they deem is useful for them.

Great advice, thanks again. I will look into it. Only 20 odd days until the move now :|
