    Hello guys,

I don't think you've seen me before in here but I read a lot of threads before I decided to sign up. :)

I'm planning a trip to Japan in 2007. The flight is already booked (900EUR Germany -> France (hey, it's Air France..) -> Tokyo!!) and I am looking for some good hotels or hostels in Tokyo and Kyoto now.
I want to stay the first of 3 weeks in Tokyo, then one and a half week in Kyoto (including an one day-trip to Osaka which means essentially to DenDen!! =) ) and another 3 days in Tokyo.

    Ok, so far so good.
    I got a recommendation from a friend:
    http://www.kangetsu.com/
Does anyone know what the neighborhood looks like? Crime anywhere?^^ Is it easy to get to Akihabara/Shinjuku/Shibuya/Ginza or will it take a lot of time? I know its located in the suburbs but it's near a train station!?

    Any more recommendations?

AAAAND: How much will a daily meal (breakfast + lunch) come?

    Thanks in advance :)

    tips

what's your budget like? If you're looking at hostel-ish accomodations, there's Sakura Guest House in Asakusa, which is fairly convenient by train to the various neighborhoods you're looking at. a single room there is in the neighborhood of Y4000/night, tho you can get a bunk in a dorm-style room (with five other strangers) for like Y2000/night. There's also a capsule hotel right by there that's Y2400/night, but you gotta leave your bags in a coin locker at the station, no room for them there.

Having just been there last week, sort of on the cheap, my general recommendations are:

Toyoko Inn in Asakusa or Shinjuku; they have pretty nice single rooms for around Y5500/night.. clean and nice, kinda like holiday inn. i was travelling with a friend and we were able to get twin rooms there for Y7500, same as the sakura house. also they include a free breakfast.

Tokyo Family Hotel in ochanomizu, also pretty cheap, and the old ladies that run the place are a hoot.. one has pet crickets! it was a little pricier, Y12,000 for a twin room and i think like Y7,000 for a single, but that's pretty average. plus its easy walking distance to akihabara, or one train stop. neat little place. ask the police officer at the koban next to ochanomizu station and he'll give you a map to the family hotel.

Dormy Inn in akihabara, Y7000 for a single room, has private toilet but no shower; there's an onsen on the roof tho, definitely worth the experience at least once.

In Kyoto, there's the R&B Inn right near the station, something like Y6500 for a single room + breakfast; I didnt stay there tho cuz it was full, as was everything else.. ended up at the Kyoto Tower Annex, which was like Y14,000 for a twin room, bit on the pricey side but real nice. The real deal tho, is the Kyoto Backpackers Inn, which is around the block from the Kyoto Tower Hotel, on the same street as the starbucks attached to the hotel (you'll know when you see it)

as for food, you can easily get by on Y500 per meal, if you stick with like yoshinoya or matsuya etc.

thats all i got off the top o my head.

wow, if it wasnt that expensive, i would come with you ;)

all i can say is that i heard from my uncle and some friends that it's pretty cheap to "live" as a tourist in japan. the flight was always the most expensive part, even if the time being there was 4 weeks or above

Y4000 / night sounds good. I already figured out the Ryokan Kangetsu for the same price. I also received some offers from my travel agent, but they're more expensive than the Kangetsu.
We will see... still searching for a good single room-hostel in Kyôtô. :katamari:

    Thx :033:

    @all
The flight was 705EUR without taxes, which is okay I think.
