Me and a friend are going to really try to get a Wii on the 19th. Now I've never tried to snag a system on day one, but I really want this thing. I'm probably not going to grab a game with it (after an upcoming concert I'll probably have 300 bucks left, but I do get paid 3 days afterwards) so Wii sports I'm hoping is fun. But yeah, do these things get hectic or does it really just depend? It seems like every store should have a lot of systems. I was thinking we should take with us some CD's (stores are in the next town about 20 minutes away), some chips and crap to drink, and a DS/PSP. We were thinking of hitting the newer Walmart we have up here at 11PM. But like how does it work, should we just go up and ask the manager or an employee when they go on sale, or what? Will they give out numbers? If Walmart fails us, there's 2 other Walmarts we can hit. But another store that seems to be getting alot is Target, which opens at 8AM. But yeah, I was just curious how these things worked. I never tried getting systems on launch before because either I was too young or didn't have the money. Am I just asking for trouble with this lol?
Go to a walmart or best buy in a less popular city / spot. Get there around midnight to 3am. Bring a DS/GBA/PSP and wait it out. There will be more then enough units.
I got a NGC at launch day (DOL-001). Obviously it wasnt as hyped as the Wii, so there was no line, just got in, got it, leave the place, and throw it in the closet:lol: EDIT: crap I forgot the advise, well go first to check how the modus operandi is going to be (staying at a line, first come first serve, etc...) and then decide if you want to camp or just pay a hobbo to stay in the line for you.
the plan to buy in a less popular town is very good imo. did this at gamecube launch and it was no problem at all, while n other cities it was chaotic referring to the stories a friend told me
Just do what the Japanese do, wait outside until someone comes out of the store then take it from them at gunpoint I remember reading stories of that whenever a new Dragon Warrior game would come out. Does this kind of thing still happen?
Lol. Well anyhow, with Walmart, I guess waiting outside the store isn't needed since there open 24 hours (most of them). So maybe we should camp out in the camping section? lol. Just kill time in the store after we find out what order stuff is going I guess...Too bad the 360 kiosks never have anything good to play on them hehe. So far yeah, it seems like 11:30 would be a good time to arrive. It seems like this might be a painless launch, like with some peoples GameCube stories. Seems like DC had the same but I don't remember. I'm just guessing that most people will have blown there money at PS3 two days before and won't return but who knows. The reason I'm wondering if this will be tough with lines and such because of all the preorder limits and stories and crap.
My handy hints to get a system at launch. (From another thread) 1 Forget places like Best Buy, Toys r Us, or Wal-Mart since that's where everyone goes. Pick a place people won't think of at first like Sears or Sam's Club (Only if you have a business membership to get in early though), or Kmart. My place of choice is Target. 2 If possible check throughout the day to see how the lines are developing. The best time to get there is at closing though I'd definitely get there before midnight. Once the stores that hold midnight raffles end more people will show up at the smaller places. The bare minimum I've seen people show up and still get a system is around 3:30-4:00 a.m. so if you show up at 5:00 a.m. you really don't have a chance. 3. Cover your bets... If possible you stay at the smaller place and have friends go to the places that are doing the raffles. If you are dealing in cash let them hold the money since they can always show up and give it to you if they don't get one. 4. Form a plan with the rest of the people there and drive off the competition. After the group gets to about 5 or 6 people tell anyone that drives by that the store manager told you that's how many systems there are that they are all spoken for. Working with the people there is the best way to insure a system. 5. Respect the order you showed up. If you have a decent bunch of people there then you can sit in your car or go get something to eat and still have a place in line when you come back. 6. Dress appropriately and bring something to do. 7. Don't bug the cleaning people and night stockers too much.
The DC launch was hell: I remember going to 2 walmarts, 4 videogames stores and I cant remember how many other places, and they didnt have shit, only a couple of bad games and some jump packs. I got a DC 2 days later with a jump pack and HotD2, and I was more than happy since after that none of my friends could get one for at least 2 weeks. No wonder why it has the second fastest selling console launch in history, right behind the PS2...
Personally, when it comes out on December the 8th here in Holland, I'm going to be in line of a toy store(not a game store, as they have already sold out in pre-orders) at 8 o' clock, so when it opens at 9 I will definetely get a Wii. And screw the fact that I have to be at school at 8:30. The first two lessons aren't important, the Wii is * . *Just kidding folks...
Yeah, our strategy was to hit the 3 walmarts first, one after the other if were out of luck, and if all else fails, hit Target and wait till it opens at 8AM. I'm just hoping out of 3 Walmarts we can snag one.
I would say ask someone in the store you are targetting in advance. See how many units they will have for release day, whether they have a pre-order system, how many are pre-ordered, what they expect the rush to be like, etc. Over here, we have I think it is 18 units coming to our shop for release day. Our shop is the size of the average Gamestop over in the US. We have a pre-order system, and I think maybe 10 are pre-ordered out of the 18. Nintendo are usually pretty good with early distribution. It is Sony who always cock up (heh)! As stated, there should be plenty to go around... even if you have to drive about for a while to find a place with any in. Pre-ordering is always good, though!!
Yeah, I have a feeling the 17th here is going to be hectic and a lot of PS3 fans are going to end up not getting a system for awhile.
I'm camping at BB for at least one unit, but then I've got a list of like 20 smaller places that I'm going to hit up on the morning of the 17th and see if they have any units not yet spoken for.
Well, my dreams of getting a Wii on launch day were blown to bits today after I got my check. They decided to pay me less then usual so I'm about 100$ or so short, plus the concert I'm going to today. So much for that... :crying: :crying: :crying: :banghead: :crying:
