I just recently got a SNES (model SHVC-CPU-01 2/1/3). It plays games perfectly fine, but the controller mappings are all wrong. For example, the Up button functions as the A button, etc.

I wanted to run the Burn-in test (I have an SD2SNES), but no buttons are mapped to Select or Start, so I couldn't start the test.

The first thing I tried doing was to replace the front panel with a known good part, but that didn't fix anything. To eliminate the possibility of a broken connector, I also ran continuity tests from the front panel to the decoupling capacitors, and it came out fine

I have tried replacing some components that I thought were bad (one of the SMD decoupling caps looked bad, but replacing it didn't do anything). I was looking at the SNES schematics and going through the path from the controller inputs to the CPU, and none of the components on the way looked bad.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?

I have broken spare SNESs and Super Famicoms to take parts from if I need (two with dead PPU2s and one with dead VRAM).

Yes. These are all known working controllers. I have tried many all with the same results and the exact same buttons being incorrect in the same way.

yeah I had a similar console, try plugging the controller in port 2 and seeing if you can play a game fine (issue on mine seemed to just be port 1, idk if you can navigate the menu on SD2SNES with controller 2 but worth a try).....also for some weird reason some games seemed to work normal (I forget the game, I'm thinking it was theme park), but all the rest just seemed to have the controller buttons all mapped weirdly

good luck finding the issue :)

but for the record, the burn in- test cart passed all tests on my console with the issue

I tried port 2 and got no response. Any specific games I can try where player 2 can start and control it?

Smash TV works with just player 2 if you have it

I'm wondering if it's a voltage issue. Make sure your power supply is good and that the 7805 is also good.

Reason I say this, is because of a similar issue I had on a famicom. If the controller lead is too long (modded) , the voltage drop across the wire caused buttons to be mapped wrong or not work at all, so, considering the snes and the nes are similar in how the controllers work, i wonder if maybe a component in the snes has gone bad?

Player two has the exact same issue with the exact same buttons being incorrect in the same way.

EDIT: Just tested the voltage on the output of the 7805, perfect 5.00 volts on my meter.

Usually lower voltage on SNESs (in my experience) results in a dimmer picture and plenty of game glitches. I've never had it cause controller issues.

Ah. Bad CPU makes sense, but I was hoping it was something else. I also don't have a rework station (or even a hot air gun) or a vacuum IC lifter, so removing SMD chips isn't exactly a possibility for me.
