    Hi everyone

    I was wondering i have seen many people mod megadrive model 1s with 50hz/60hz switches but is there a way of making a pal console 60hz and keep it that way without having a switch to turn back to 50hz

    I have an model 1 jap pal console that i would like to be modded to a 60hz console and to stay at 60hz

    Is it possible, if so what would i need to do?

    Thanks in advanced :)

    Instead of having a switch just cut the 50hz trace and then put a wire from one contact to the other on the 60hz contact. Two or three solder points, pretty simple job.

    That's what I assume anyway, seems simple enough. You're doing essentially the same thing just bypassing the switch and hardwiring it to do one thing instead of two. Never done it my self though.

    Jp3/jp4 (they are the same point) needs to have +5v to get 60hz.

    Your console would be an asian version (ie not jpn) if it is playing in 50hz (jp3/jp4) are ground.

    Refer picture above.

    Cut any trace going from GND to JP3.

    Connect +5V to JP4.

    done.

    For future reference:

    JP3 = 50hz
    JP4 = 60hz
    JP2 = English language
    JP1 = Japanese language

    just a note also running at 60hz will screw up composite video if you use that, you'll need RGB scart to get a decent full colour picture

    ... or you can feed the video encoder with a 3.56mhz or 4.43mhz crystal oscillator to guarantee colour output if you don't go RGB. That's how I used to do it before going down the RGB path.

    there is that option too, but as this guy is from the uk RGB scart is probably an easier and better option

    To fully and properly convert a PAL console to NTSC you need to change the jumper from 50hz to 60hz and replace the 4 pin oscillator box for the NTSC carrierx15 oscillator. PAL oscillator is PAL carrierx12.

    If you cannot replace the oscillator box you will have composite with wrong chroma carrier frequency, which will render your image black and white. That's what synrgy87 was talking about.

    Be careful. If you make it stay 60hz, then the PAL Mega CD will not run. Nor any locked PAL carts.

    USA Genesis has JP2 and JP4 each bridged with their opposite side.

    I don't know about linking JP2 to JP3. But it looks like an option from the above picture.

    You're supposed to connect the solder point from left to the point on right. Not that like pictured. That's why there's white traces marked on the board.

    You're cutting JP3 to be able to close JP4. Let's not make ugly mods ... lol

    so is what I have done in the picture making sense?

    I want to be really sure that what I am doing is correct since I really don't want to cut the wrong trace or solder something wrong!

    Thanks

    Well it's not the Sega method. Only JP2 and JP4 are connected on a Genesis.
