Hey guys, I wrote this page somewhat recently: http://micro-64.com/features/turok2nfrpg1.shtml It was a feature where I noted every difference I could find between the Turok 2 demo and the retail version. It took quite a while to write and drove me nuts. Was fun to do though. Just wondering does anybody own or have played a Turok 2 demo? Has anyone else found any other differences or interesting things that I missed? I showed what could be accessed on the cart, it would be cool if there was part of level 2, or some other kind of inaccessible beta content.
If you use n64soundtool you can extract unused sounds in the demo that aren't in the final version. It's been a while since I checked, but I believe some of the instruments used in the later levels are still present even though the songs themselves aren't. There is also a lot of unused voice clips for Joshua. None of them were used in the final game. Not even the PC version, which had numerous voice clips for each multiplayer character had them. Again, it's been a while, but I remember three different voice clips when he falls off a cliff (I believe the final version only used one), one clip that sounds like he's burning to death (Since you take damage by fire in the demo, maybe they originally intended it for that?), and several taunts full of hammy voice acting. It seems like they were going for more of a Duke Nukem style, where the main character has an actual personality. Personally I think the unused voice clips sound corny as hell, so I'm glad they decided against using them. Perhaps there's a chance of unused models and other assets hidden away in the cart?
That is quite a fantastic write up. Awesome job! :applause: I can't begin to imagine how many hours of work went into that.
Very good article! I tried to see if more rooms existed in the kiosk, using the warp modifier, but I think they were all removed or something.
I skimmed the Kiosk demo with a hex editor, noticed a few things. The build date for the demo was compiled September 2 1998. My ROM of Turok 2 which I believe is the initial black cart copy since it has the multiplayer warp glitch was compiled November 10, 1998. I haven't tried my actual copy yet, but I suspect it's the same. A Q1 1998 build when the game was originally going to be 16MB is likely not the case here, it seems more like Acclaim just didn't see the point in using a 32MB cart for a demo. Lots of text that reads "D:/Turok2/N64/source/..." etc. Text from other levels missions are still present, but not all of it. I noticed only text from levels 1, 3, and 5 are still present. I recall the leftover instruments for those levels being present, but not the other levels. Maybe they originally intended for the demo to play small sections of those three levels instead of just parts of level 1? Maybe incomplete versions of the levels are still present. After mission text, it says "demo game complete! Massive worlds .. hive... caves... flesh eater... city entrance... multiple mission objectives... child clapping... awsome enemies.. hive... perlin.. flesh eater... incredible bosses... queen... mother.. blind one eye... armory located.. game demo - no access". I've never seen that text used in the demo and for whatever reason it's still present in the final copy. It kind of sounds like directions for a teaser trailer that might have played once the demo was completed. Multiplayer related text is still present. The levels seem to have different names from the final. (cave torture, spinal rippage, chaos tunnels, casual dress, warfare sound, watery vault, dining for two, mine is bigger, dare ye enter, barbeque city) The original names listed in the same order were: experimentata, moonlit mayhem, close quartered, vulcan's forge, teleportastic, mirrororrim, fish in a barrel, h 2 woah!, escheria, mosh crypt, squares cubed, crazy eight, bullseye. There seems to be 3 different control types: Turok (expert in final), Golden (Arcade in final), and ??????. The ?????? is also on the final copy. In other parts the Golden control is referred to as 007. Text for hi-rez, hi-rez (lbox), and lo-rez is present.
Holy crap that's some excellent finds! I will correct the build date in that article later. As for the text, "Demo Game Complete!" and "Game Demo - No Access" are used in the demo. Strange if they're still in the retail version. The rest of that text is new to me. I'll have to learn this N64soundtool as I'd definitely be interested in hearing the bad voice acting on Joshua. Just wondering, since you know how to check the build dates, what is the build date on version 1.1, aka the gray carts of Turok 2?
The voice clips are high-pitched, so you'll need a program like audacity to hear them correctly. Looking through it again he only has 10 dialog clips. The rest are unused grunts and screams. While searching the 1.1 ROM for the build date I noticed this: "ARRIVING CHRISTMAS 1998. TUROK 2: SEEDS OF EVIL... FOR UP TO 4 PLAYERS. DEATH MATCH PLAY.... INCREDIBLE BOSSES... 30 TERRIFYING ENEMIES... 6 MASSIVE WORLDS.... 24 AWESOME WEAPONS... FINAL GAME WILL FEATURE:.... IS A MATURE RATED GAME... TUROK 2 - SEEDS OF EVIL. VIOLENCE AND GORE... HAS BEEN EDITED TO REDUCE... THIS IN-STORE DEMONSTRATION. EXPANSION PACK FOUND!... PRESS ANY BUTTON.... visit our website at www.acclaim.net" Huh. Anyway, the build date. Believe it or not, it was compiled Nov 11, 1998, just one day after v1.0. I guess they realized they forgot to disable the warp cheat in multiplayer and fixed it as quick as they could.
I just wanted to say thanks for such an in-depth and interesting article. I never knew of an in-store demo version before. Excellent stuff!
What a nice interesting find, would love a dump of it to try it myself. Nice work on the write up too mate.
This ROM has been dumped. I don't know if this website allows you to post links to ROM websites, but if you google "turok 2 kiosk demo rom" it will be the first result. And thanks very much. I'm glad to document this ROM as there wasn't too much information about it before.
