So I was lucky to find a cheap deal with two broken PS2 slim consoles - one is a SCPH-77007a, NTSC-J and the other is a SCPH-70004a. It's a v12 I guess, as the board reads GH-032-31. They both have the fan connector broken off, but thankfully the pads are intact, so I guess it's just a matter of soldering the wires from the connector straight to the board. The taiwanese v15 seems to have the fan from the PAL v12 and that the v12 has no fan. I'll just solder the v12 fan in there and call it a day. It's also been chipped with a Modbo 4.0 (that was quite a surprise). My questions are: 1. The only points not soldered on the v15 are Y and SX. I know the SX point is for PS1 discs but what is Y for? 2. Should I take care of anything with the v12 (other than a new laser ribbon)? I heard those would burn the laser.

Thanks. I guess that means Y is unneeded (I don't watch movies on DVDs) so that leaves me with just SX to connect since I do play PS1 games.
Seems it is a v12 after all - GH-032-31 has three vias on the underside of the RS chip. v13 boards have only 2. Is there any alternative to the PIC fix? I can't burn PIC chips as my programmer simply won't work. I heard there's some fixes - one involving resistors and another one with zener diodes.
I am willing to do the diode mod for the v12. After all, they both came broken. I wouldn't be really sad if it breaks again.
I wouldnt bother. All the PIC mod does is shutdown the console if it detects a problem. So it basically does nothing the whole time, until it sees an issue and shuts the console down. I have never had one trip out, but its due to the quality of the DVDR's you use. Use good media/burner combo and you should be fine with no mods.
Well, I use Datamaxx DVD+Rs, which are Verbatim MCC004 discs so I guess they're pretty good and also at a very conveniable price than white surfaced original Verbatims. I've had nothing but problems with white Verbatim discs in both older machines (30004R, v5, GH-015) and newer machines (an 75003 and a 77004). I should mention the last two consoles mentioned had brand new lasers. Other than this, some of my burns are also on Omega DVDs, which have the CMC MAG AM3 displayed on the MID section. Their CDs are Moser Baer India, although these were pretty good as opposed to what people say. Funny how I had so much luck with cheap brands almost nobody ever heard of turn up (X-Data, Traxdata and even BMC) as being good DVDs but the real discs (Verbatim in this case) were awfully crappy. All in all, I guess the 70004 won't have any trouble running these DVDs then, although I might track down and do the Zener fix down the road. Gotta do with what I have Worst case scenario, it gets harvested for parts,as I have another modded 79003 that needs a spindle, and it'll probably get replaced by a 70004a (this one is a b) that I hope to be a v13. It comes in a pack with a 77004a.
