A decade-old problem solved with a hex editor? http://www.seganerds.com/2017/08/15/two-fans-have-reportedly-fixed-the-atgames-genesis-audio-issues/
I don't own one of the affected devices, but it's always nice to get improvements for buggy products (even if it isn't by the manufacturer). So, for those of us not fluent in Portuguese - what did these guys fix exactly? Fix an inbuilt emulator? Or was the SoC configured incorrectly?
The file MDI.Bin sets how the Red Kid 2500 processor works. They opened it with a hex editor and found that the clock was set wrongly. Just this change fixed the audio. But they did a lot of other changes for example: They fixed some bugs in the games and also to insert picture of the games in the menu. They are still working, so, probably we are going to see more improvements hehe I hope it was clear LoL (My English is not so good)
From the video linked in the article, it's still pretty ear bleeding and I wouldn't call it fixed. Improved but still has a way to go. I'd rather play on Genecyst in DOS.
Oh man, Genecyst. So many memories... I'd heard of scratchy audio and totally out of tune music, but I don't think I've heard a Genesis clone before that has only one instrument out of tune while the rest is OK, such as with this one. Still baffles me this stuff is considered acceptable to sell.
I wonder if the people putting this sort of stuff out just honestly don't know it's terrible. Or if it's what we suspect and that they know and just don't care or can't fix it.
There is a difference, it's just still pretty crappy. While I could be remembering wrong, I think Genecyst on DOS offered superior sound emulation.
