Two very important PSX dev kit questions:

Discussion in 'Sony Programming and Development' started by Benedict_Arnold, Jun 21, 2005.

  1. Some very important PSX dev kit questions:

1.) What operating system is required for a PSX dev kit? All of the documentation that I am reading says Win 95. Has anyone got it to work on Win 98 with little or no tweaks? How about Win XP? How about Win ME or 2000? To be on the safe side I ordered Win 95 (ugh, an original version with cd key). But I really don't want Win 95. I need to be able to use CD-Gen as well.

2.) What the heck is PRO-DG? Or something like that. I have that disc and not sure what it does. It might have been the thing that installed the Performance Analyzer (which is useless unless you own a DTL-H2700?)

3.) What is PSY-Q? I was given this as well.

4.) What free shareware program should I use to program games in?

5.) What does CD-Gen do? Does that allow me to create a PSX bootable CD? (bootable only on a debugging system I assume) Or is it only a copying program like CDR-Win?

6.) Lastly, has anyone in here actually created anything using a PSX dev kit?

I was also given two programs, one that removes protection from psx games, and the other forces ntsc on pal games as well as centers the screen automatically and gives me gameshark codes to do the same. PAL4U never centered the screen for me. This program works wonders (except doesn't work on some earlier PAL titles).

PSY-Q = compiler. Beyond that ill let others here tell you (im an artist, not a programer).

  3. So if I had source code I could use Psy-Q to compile it? Then I could play it on a dev kit or burn it to a CD and use on a debug system?

While as I havn't used it personaly, yes, I believe you could. Psy-Q for the psx (they have made variations of it for other systems) is a C-Compiler and assembler made by SN Systems. From what I can remember its supposed to be one of if not the best compiler for the psx, and was often the choice for professionally made games.

  5. I thought Psygnosis made PSY-Q. At least it would make sense because of the name and I could have sworn I read about it too. Did Psygnosis start a new company? (Thanks for the link, although I didn't see any PS1 dev stuff there, I did see mention of PRODG for ps2. It might be similar to the thing I have for ps1)

I used Win98 and I think it worked fine

Pro-DG is an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) similar (but not as good) to Visual Studio. For use with Psy-Q

Psy-Q is the development tools and libraries used for compiling and creating PSX games.

Pro-DG should be fine I think.

If i remember correctly you use it to create psx ISO files. (note, it will not make your games playable in an ordinary PSX, for that you need sonys PSX-disc burner (don't know what it's called)). I couldn't really understand it to good cuz I never found a manuall for it..

I did some small demos/tests with it. (unfortanetly all of it diseperd in a hardware crash 4 month ago)

nice. only tested PAL4U once, for Tekken 3 that I only had on NTSC.. and it didn't work at all. =/

Where can you get a shareware version of PRO-DG from?

  9. One question, why does it say on the front page of the thread "Two very important PSX dev kit questions"?

...And then go on to ask six questions, lol!!!

  10. I actually had two questions then made it six. I edited the topic but I guess it never changed. I'm always thinking of more questions to ask. :p

I think the topic poster is able to edit the first post and change the title from there.

...Or maybe not, judging from Benedict_Arnold's post.

yep. To change the thread you have to edit the thread and not the first post.

You can't. It's a commercial program, only available (officially) to licensed developers.

I've used Win98 and Win2K. Win98 is definately prefereable for the PCI boards. You may have to swap the boards around the PCI sockets though due to the way it assigns IRQs and such.

Close, the libararies are actually supplied by Sony (but older versions may be included with ProDG)

It was actually the software to burn the CDs. It would only recognise a couple of slow old clunky writers, so you would need one of those to use it. You also need specific ASPI drivers which could be a pain to get. They're also very picky about media (as are the DevKit drives). The only media we found to be anywhere near reliable were Sony branded sliver disks.

I had a number of commercial games released on that platform (and one unreleased game) but it's many years ago.

  16. I actually have one of those dev clunky writers. And I can't get it to be recognized by the system. I even installed ASPI drivers.

What games did you work on? (released and unreleased)

I created a Sporting Clays game for the PSX (+ N64, Saturn and Pocketstation).

I released the source code at http://releases.emuvibes.com/

You so need to upload the PocketStation SDK somewhere, I used to have it but lost it :-(

  19. I think I have a copy of that on a bootable CD somewhere. That's funny. Or maybe I had it on Saturn. I'll have to check. I may have lost it since.

FYI, when I load some PSX IDE programs, during the install it shows a picture of the pocketstation. Does that mean it's supported?
