The PSPgo was released on the 1st / 2nd of October 2009 with a RRP of £224.99. Three days later and most retailers are already slashing the price after an abysmal launch weekend:

    Amazon.co.uk - Previously sold for £224.99, now £199.99:

    PLAY.com - Previously £249.99, now £199.99:

    GAME.com - Previously £224.99, now £199.99:

    HMV.com - £199.99:

    Argos.com - £219.99:

    ShopTo.net - Still £224.99:

In this thread we can watch the slow downward spiral of this most hated and unnecessary portable console as it drops in price over the next few months leading to Christmas. No doubt it's not on any PSP fans' Xmas wishlist...

    Even at £199.99 it's expensive.

    That's $317 USD or 217 Euro.

It would be 317 US if somebody from the US would buy it in Europe, but I bet the US prices are 199 which is about 135 euro or worstcase 249 which comes to 170 euro :)

Some dude on the bus was playing Gran Turismo on one, it looked horribly cramped. I decided to pull out my PSP-1003 and play Gran Turismo on it, playing with the empty UMD door.

The control deck bit looks as if Sony forgot that the PSP is a handheld games machine.

I think it's a very well written article and I completely agree with PushSquare.

Really, people are actng like their current PSPs and UMDs are about to explode or magically turn into Jelly Beans. Sony have stated God-knows how many times that the PSPgo is not here to replace the 3000, they will be sold concurrently. Therefore I wouldn't expect anyone with a large UMD collection to want a PSPgo, but people are acting like they're being forced to upgrade. All across the internet there's cries of "what about my huge collection of 150 UMDs? No transfer system, what shall I do? Woe is me." The answer is quite simple: stick with your perfectly fucking functioning PSP you already have, or upgrade to a nice new 3000; preferably the lilac Hannah Montana one.

For eveyone else who's never owned a PSP (like myself) the PSPgo is a nice option. It's a smaller, more portable system and that portability is increased by not having to carry UMDs. I have enough shit I carry around in my pockets on a daily basis: wallet, keys, iPhone, Insulin pens, blood test kit, tobacco pouch and t' Oakleys. I really don't see the 3000 plus a bunch of games as being very portable when I have to have it all in my man-bag along with the MacBook. I might actually be able to find a spare pocket to keep a PSPgo in, and that's a good thing, what with it being a portable and all that.

I think this pretty much nails it. Digital distribution is the future and it's here to stay. I really can't fathom why people want their houses overtaken by shelves ramed with ugly, dusty DVDs, games and books. I prefer a nice clean minimalist environment with artwork and sculpture taking up the wall space. Bring on the decent eBook readers so I can finally get rid of several cardboard boxes full of Manga and the few actual books I have. It would seem that I'm in the minority with these views but there you go.

My main problem with the PSPgo is how Sony are handling the PSN Store. For a system that is totally reliant on the Store for content, Sony really aren't handling it very well. Actually, that was an understatement: Sony are absolute fucking retard clown muppets and haven't got the slightest clue in the world. Twats. The amount of games available on the European store is pathetic compared to the quantity available in the US and the quality of titles doesn't even begin to compare. The PSone game selection is pathetic and the amount pf actual PSP games is shocking. It seems like Sony is more bothered about these sodding Minis and trying to compete with the App Store. When I do get a PSPgo I reckon it'll be sync'd with a US account just so I can have a decent selection of games.

Don't know about you _SD_, but some people (actually most people) like to OWN stuff.

I have no problem with Digital Distribution. The problem is when it's the only way. The PSPGo is a test to see if people fall into this distribution.

While it has it's advantages (like you pointed), it also has it's disadvantages. No competitive prices, unable to sell games are just some of the most remembered disadvantages.

What happens, for example, if 10 ten years in the future a PSPGo dies and PSN is also dead? Who will guarantee that the PSN servers will keep history for so much time? With UMDs you would only need to get a used PSP and you are back on it.

While the people, like you, thinks digital distribution is a good thing, you should be able to understand why some people dislike it.

Movies are already avaiable in lots of digital distribution systems (including on videogame consoles), but people still like to buy DVDs and Blu-ray. People like to buy music through AppleStore or any other service, but there's also people that likes to buy CD's and LP's.

Some people like dusty books, DVD's, Laserdiscs or any old (or new) stuff. The same way people like comic books, game merchandise, and so on.

I think that digital distribution can work together with physical media, like it happens with PS3, Xbox360, Wii and even the PSP. But having only digital distribution as the main way to distribute game, most gamers won't like it. That's why people are criticizing the PSPGo. I guess for casual gamers that's fine. But not for me.

If the industry goes download only, the 2nd hand market for videogames is DEAD. At least for nextgen. And this is why I play retro.

Thing is I do feel like I own the games that I've purchased off PSN or iTunes. If the PS3 dies I can just redownload the same games onto a replacement machine. Hell, I can have up to 5 activated systems in both iTunes and on the PSN so at least the DRM is quite reasonable there. The only thing missing is a box that will inevitably sit there and get dusty and the fact I don't have to move my arse off the sofa to play a game.

And selling games second hand? Game or GameStation will give you what, a tenner for a brand new game and about 4 quid when that £40 game is a couple of months old. So far WipEout HD Fury has cost just over £20, Fat Princess was £12.99 and Trine £15.99. I never even entertained the concept of not beng able to sell my PSN or iPhone games, not when they're that cheap to begin with. I would also expect that I could take my PSN purchases over to the PS4 when the time comes.

I know all this is dependant on the servers for XBL, PSN and iTunes continuing to provide service. But this is Microsoft, Sony and Apple we're talking about here.

I agree that digital distribution isn't perfect and there's a very long way to go. I think we'll see physical media for quite a while yet but more and more people will start accepting it, just like people now accept mp3s.

What are you going to do, if those servers are gone in, say, 10 or so years? Then you can't just redownload everything.

That will turn heaps of PSPgo's into semi-unusable bricks.
