BarCode: Well, it's not really console-developish. More software developmentish (too much Java, J2ME, PHP in my life, sorry). Gleavepaul: On the PDA side of things, cross-compatibility would be an issue. I'd probably use a J2ME/Java-based frontend which links to the database via online. An offline version is a bit too likely to get knicked by other companies, and would have to be updated all the time. On a side note, I'd probably Creative Commons the site. What do people think?
At the Mo all my data I have is in a spreadsheet, which has mostly just name of each game. I haven't gone thro any regional variations as its only just got started.
To be honest, that's where it kind of all started with this project. Me and my girl were trying to build a database of our games collection using OpenOffice and, after the 3rd attempt, were frustrated by the awfulness of it (really, try it. It's database handling is bad). So, I considered building a system in (at the time) the only thing I knew how to code in - PHP. Then I thought, well why don't we make it so anybody can keep their collections together. Currently, I have all the database handling (viewing, addition, editing and removal) done, plus the database all set up and going. Still to do: * User handling (Guests, Members, Editors and Admins) * User data handling (as in personal notes, condition, etc.) * Photos and galleries * CSS & Navigation * Basic content (I have a few bits of test data, but nothing significant) * Initial testing phase (as I know it's got a few bugs in before I even consider it usable by the everyday joe) * Securing I'll probably have to limit the number of initial users initially, but I'll update everyone when I can get people in to properly give it a go. It'll probably be April/May.
All mine is intended to be was a database of every game, no fancy front end just quick and simple. At this early stage there is approx 6000 games listed, little to none regional variation.
Meanwhile I'm approaching it from an 'everyman's' perspective. Many people in the retro gaming circles have a wide selection of games and consoles, bordering different countries, different variations (ones in Special Edition packaging, promos, betas, etc.) and to just have a pure database of one country is not what I'm trying to do. Equally though, I'm approaching the aspects of user-generated content as there is plenty of data I will NEVER locate without months and months of searching. What do people think?
just to note the regional variation bit - Im lacking purely because I yet to have the info to hand. Agreed that it needs to be in there.
I have tried to avoid direct copying purposely (the data in the DB so far is deliberately false in order to fully test the system), but I suppose it is inevitable due to user content and addition. However, I intend to incorporate some sort of appropriation system for things like images (a bit like Wikipedia) where, if an image has not been created by the user who uploads it they must say where they got it from. Thoughts?
A quick update on the project: Due to various work demands (for example: a flipping essay on the UK laws regarding suppliers of peer-to-peer software), work on the site has been slow. I've done a touch more work on some DB problems, CSS and navigation is done. Hopefully though, work should be speeding up on it soon.
just be a bad guy and steal the concept from dvdprofiler they have program that check just the barcode of the dvdcase and checks only for the cover and details i myself use a barcode scanner for that matter but you gotta make a program for the whole database work which will cost much time and effort
