What version of Eee PC do you own? 900/901 or 700 series?

    I have a 701: 4G Surf

If you're willing to spend more money, I think there are better options out now, but not at the price range of the original Eee (mine was $350). I want something with a bigger screen and better processor, but at close to the same price.

Ubuntu feels fine even on machines where XP runs like crap.

I've seen a EEE running Ubuntu and Compiz with no slowdown:nod:

I've had on my Eee, Fedora Core (Eeedora), Ubuntu 7.10 (eeebuntu) Xubuntu (eeexubuntu) Windows XP (nlited of course) and Mac OSX Tiger, which have all run very well, except tiger, which had some issues.....

Of 'em all, i have to say i liked the stock xandros most, with xp second, and ubuntu third. For me Eeedora was a pure nightmare...painless install, but horrible media support, bad sound support, and it took up more HDD then stock xandros itself....(though i think it may have something to do with that i installed it over xp without formatting anything)

If I had to choose a UMPC right now I'll go for the Wind.

That or wait and see how the MiniInspiron is.

you mean the dell one? It looks nice and all, but last i heard it still used a SSD. Fine and all, but they're much smaller in capacity and really never seen any speed improvements.

I've seen the Acer Aspire version which is quite nice for $379CDN

The AspireOne has a crappier screen than the Wind, AND a SSD...

Is all down to the price though, if I can get the Dell E (thats the final name) with a 12 inch screen and a 16GBSSD for somewhere near the price of the Wind, why not?

I heard it will boot Ubuntu in 5 seconds, and XP in 10, both full versions.

What is your source for this? I haven't seen any evidence that the screen will be of poorer quality. The SSD is not a disadvantage, and it may be that you can change it to a "regular" hard drive. I personally prefer an SSD because there is no possibility of shock damage (unless you smash it or something equally as stupid).

If I had the money, I'd probably get an Eee 901. The Atom is pretty impressive, and it has a much nicer screen. I think I'd still want a traditional laptop, though, because I might want to use something like Photoshop or play a recent game.

First, check the post above mine, I'm not the one with a problem against the SSD.

    The Aspire has a 8.9-inch 1024 x 600 screen, vs Wind's 10-inch (I meant smaller, my bad)

And both Wind and E use Atoms too you know?

No one said you had a problem.

The Aspire's choice of the Atom as a processor is one of the reasons I'm looking forward to it.

I call BS on the whole "boot ubuntu/xp in under 10 seconds"

Don't get me wrong, it is faster, but not lighting fast like some have said. I think my Eee booted xp in bout 25-30 seconds from a cold boot, ubuntu was slightly longer. OS X was two minutes LOL (from external drive)

BTW: I like SSD's, don't get me wrong, I would just rather have 160gb instead of 16gb at the same price :p

Same I, reason why I prefer the Wind over the One or the E.

About boot time, well the thing with SSDs is that a good one can and will get such times, but cheapy/crappy ones tend to be slow, sometimes as slow as a regular 7200RPM HDD.

Obviously a good one means the E wont be cheap, but then again nor will be the new Eee.

Ya, using stock flash usually isn't as good as the higher quality modules you can get.

I think for me, its between the Wind and Eee PC 1000h for the HD. Perhaps other UMPC's too, if they are also small and light. But I hear the Wind crashes on Ubuntu which makes me somewhat against getting a wind just yet.

Anyone else think these UMPC's really lack a TV-Out?

I don't think it's a huge necessity, and even so most UMPC's I've seen have a VGA-out. That "limits" you to basically any LCD TV with a VGA port.

If you needed to plug in to a convential tube TV, then the regular USB adapters still serve their purpose (assuming you're using Windows or a device that's compatible with Linux).

Unless you plan on using one to run emus on an old TV I dont see why you'll need a TV-out.

Hmmm Ive got 2 EEEpc 701s (a 4g and 8g). There are great machines just that they are a little slow and the screen a tad small. Are the 901s much different? Or go for the 1000 series?

I think the 901 series uses the same screen as the 900 does. The only diffrence is that they use the Atom processor. The 1000 series is the only one that uses less cramped keyboard layout.
